No. 1 Oscar Smith 42, Indian River 10

J.C. Coleman rushed for two touchdowns as the visiting Tigers (2-0) rolled in their Southeastern District opener.

Heath Saunders put the Braves (0-2) up 3-0 with an early 21-yard field goal. Oscar Smith then reeled off 42 consecutive points, beginning with Jaston George’s 87-yard scoring return on the ensuing kickoff.

Coleman scored on runs of 6 and 10 yards, and Raysean Richardson added a 47-yard interception return for a touchdown during the Tigers’ spree. Tigers quarterback Phillip Sims had a relatively quiet night, throwing for 183 yards and a score.

No. 2 Ocean Lakes 28, Tallwood 7

Lafonte Thoroughgood thrashed through the middle of the Lions’ defense for a 21-yard touchdown run to put visiting Ocean Lakes (3-0) up for good with less than three minutes left in the first half of a Beach District clash.

Byron Mitchell blocked a punt that was recovered at the Ocean Lakes 5 to help set up the only score for the Lions (0-2) midway through the first quarter. A play later, Nathan Driver scored on a 5-yard run.

Reginald Owens extended the Dolphins’ lead to 21-7 with a 42-yard interception return for a TD in the third quarter. Tallwood then failed to capitalize on two possessions inside the Dolphins’ 20 within the final 10 minutes.

William Whitehead capped the scoring with a 52-yard scamper down the left sideline with 29 seconds to go for Ocean Lakes, which has won its last 15 regular-season games.

Landstown 21, Green Run 11

The Eagles (2-1) took advantage of the Stallions’ mistakes in a Beach District victory, dropping Green Run to 0-3. All three of Landstown’s touchdowns came after turnovers. Two were fumble recoveries that put the Eagles in excellent field position and one came on an interception by Antoine Staton, who returned it for a TD.

Landstown limited Green Run to only two first downs and 3 yards in the first half.

Wilson 28, Menchville 27

Playing under the lights at home for the first time, the Presidents (1-1) claimed the victory on a strange decision by Menchville (0-2).

Trailing by one, the Monarchs (0-2) elected to go for a 2-point conversion even though their kicker had made three consecutive extra points. And 5:11 remained in the game.

Quarterback Der’Woun Greene passed for one touchdown, ran for another and made a 2-point conversion run as Wilson (1-1) snapped a five-game losing streak.

He also made a game-saving fumble recovery on the Wilson 6 with 43 seconds left.

Wilson athletic director Jack Kennedy said 1,600 tickets were printed and that all were sold. The crowd was the largest at a home Wilson game ever.

Key stats: M–Clifton Richardson 25-108 rushing and 77-yard kickoff return for TD. W–Derrick Knight 11-86 TD rush; Rayshad Riddick 5-47 TD receiving.

No. 4 Lake Taylor 44, Kecoughtan 7

Derrion Walton ran for 150 yards and a touchdown as the Titans (2-1) amassed 312 rushing yards.

The Warriors (1-1) were held to minus-48 rushing yards.

Walton opened the scoring on a 45-yard sprint just two minutes in. He also scored on a 46-yard punt return in the third quarter.

Esha Stefanski carried six times for 36 yards and scored on runs of 16 and 3 yards.

Lake Taylor quarterback Kevin Swofford threw for one touchdown, a 19-yarder to Ahron Neil, and ran for another score.

Salem 35, No. 9 First Colonial 7

Darryl Jackson rushed for four touchdowns and tallied a fifth on a pass reception as the SunDevils (1-2) toppled the visiting Patriots (2-1) in a Beach District contest.

Salem quarterback Jason Walker threw for 205 yards, while Jackson totaled 65 yards rushing and 52 receiving.

Middle linebacker Joshua Rogers keyed Salem’s defense with nine tackles, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.

The Patriots committed five turnovers.

Kellam 35, Princess Anne 0

The Knights (1-2) used a balanced rushing attack and three touchdowns from Dean Morrocu to beat the visiting Cavaliers (0-3) in this Beach District match-up.

Morrocu had 38 of Kellam’s 207 rushing yards – on only three carries. He rushed for two scores and caught a 46-yard TD pass from Matt Schmitt.

No. 7 Norcom 12, Heritage 3

Chavelle Atkins ran for 119 yards and DeAndre Lamb threw for 130 yards and two touchdowns to lift the Greyhounds to 3-0.

Norcom opened the scoring on a fake field goal, with Lamb – the holder – taking the snap and hitting Isaac White for a 19-yard pass play. Lamb also threw an 8-yard TD pass to White in the fourth quarter.

Atkins rushed for 104 yards after halftime.

Marcel Howard’s 27-yard field goal provided the only points for Heritage (0-2).

Hickory 20, King’s Fork 14 OT

George Godfrey’s quarterback sneak in overtime lifted the Hawks to 2-0.

Hickory forced overtime with a double-pass that went for 90 yards in the final three minutes of regulation. Godfrey finished with 60 yards passing and 40 rushing.

Denbigh 28, Granby 25

Allen Simon scored one touchdown and passed for two more as Denbigh won its second straight game and dropped the Comets 0-2.

Lakeland 43, Nansemond River 15

Cedric Johnson returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown as the Cavaliers (2-0) rolled in Southeastern District opener between two Suffolk teams.

The Warriors fell to 0-2.

Norfolk Christian 42, Hampton Roads Academy 36

Norfolk Christian (1-2) outlasted Hampton Roads Academy (0-2) in double OT.

Norfolk Christian’s Kwontie Moore had 17 carries for 186 yards and three touchdowns, and teammate Breon Bailey added 139 yards and two touchdowns.

Norfolk Academy 30, Greenbrier Christian 0

Linebacker Marshall Scott returned two interceptions for touchdowns as the visiting Bulldogs evened their record at 1-1.

The Bulldogs rushed for 249 yards, with Scott Heller leading the way with 80. Kippy Lang’at added 49 yards rushing and two TDs.

Nansemond-Suffolk 27, Broadwater 7

Will Crenshaw rushed for 217 yards and two touchdowns on 18 attempts to lift the Saints.

Nansemond-Suffolk (1-1) rushed for more than 300 yards as first-year coach Kevin Allen picked up his first victory.

The Saints’ Ryan May added 25 yards and a TD.

Bishop Sullivan 14, Portsmouth Christian 13

Bishop Sullivan (1-1) rallied from a 13-0 deficit, led by Brante McIntyre’s 70 yards passing and a touchdown.

Linebacker Brian McCaskill had an interception late in the fourth quarter to set up the winning drive.
