Hertford district judge appointed to N.C. Superior Court

HERTFORD, N.C.

A  veteran district court judge and Hertford resident, J.Carlton “J.C.” Cole, has been appointed to serve as a Superior Court judge in the 1st Judicial District, which includes Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank and Perquimans counties in North Carolina.

“Judge Cole is a person of the highest integrity, highly disciplined, and a gifted individual,” Gov. Beverly Perdue said in a release. “His years of experience on the district court bench have prepared him well for the superior court.”

Perdue appointed Cole to replace J. Richard Parker, who is to retire Sept. 30.

In 1994, Cole was appointed to district court judge to serve out the term left vacant by his wife, Janice, who was appointed by the president to be U.S. Attorney, Eastern District of North Carolina. Later, Cole was elected to the post.

Before becoming a judge, Cole practiced law in Perquimans County and was chairman of the 1st Congressional District Democratic Party.

Cole attended undergraduate school at Livingstone College. He earned a master’s degree in criminal justice and received his law degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law.
