HAMPTON
What you think of Jamie Foxx’s concert at the Hampton Coliseum on Thursday depends on which side of the aisle you sit.
If you are the type who enjoys the music of Soulja Boy, played during a break, and romantic overtures like, as Foxx suggests, "a master suite with white Zinfandel," then this was right up your proverbial alley.
If, however, you’d deem unintentionally hilarious the sight of a man in a leather jacket, pants and driving gloves – so very Eddie Murphy "Raw"’ circa 1987 – making “sexy face” à la Ben Stiller in “Zoolander” for 90 minutes, then this “Blame It” tour might not have been your idea of a good time.
Foxx, bless his heart, is a talented singer, gifted musician, piercing comedian and, as his Oscar attests, a great actor. However, an actual tour trying to merge all these elements results in a slightly messy and campy affair.
He was at his best when he just sang from his limited oeuvre, but these moments were too often interlaced with smooth-player-mack motions that seemed corny. Plus, Foxx seemed hardly able to keep a straight face as he cooed his sweet nothings at the women in the audience, creating a difficult puzzle for the viewer: Is he serious, silly, sexy or some awkward combination?
Whatever the case, his show – at least in its first B-movie half – suffered for it. But it did get better.
