Lake Whitehurst to shut down to fishing

Posted to: Norfolk Outdoors Sports

NORFOLK

Lake Whitehurst is closing to the public.

Access to one of the area's top fishing holes will be shut down Nov. 1.

The property on Shore Drive that is home to a parking lot, wide boat ramp and two fishing piers is owned by Norfolk International Airport.

The airport has leased the property to the city of Norfolk since 1990, and the lake is owned by the city, which uses it for water supply.

But the land lease expired last year, and the airport is taking back control of the property as part of its plans for runway expansion.

"It isn't that the airport doesn't care about recreation," airport executive director Wayne Shank said. "There were some hard decisions to be made. And if we're going to build a parallel runway in the future, we can't allow public access at that site."

While anglers might understand the airport's needs, they still say they are upset.

"We're not too happy about it, that's for sure," said Bob Bullen, who runs a largemouth bass fishing club called Bass-Jon's. "Several clubs use that lake for tournaments. It's well fished. The Navy guys at the base come over and fish from the piers.

"And of all of the city lakes, Lake Whitehurst has the nicest facility."

And some outstanding fishing opportunities.

Lake Whitehurst, which starts at Shore Drive at the end of the runway and stretches past the Norfolk Botanical Garden on its way to Military Highway, is the most unique water supply lake in the state.

Its urban location gives it a different feel than other lakes in Virginia.

Whitehurst has healthy populations of largemouth bass, crappie, chain pickerel, bluegill and perch. But it's a population of walleye - a fish known more up north and in cold-weather areas of the country - that makes the lake special.

"(Whitehurst has) the highest catch rates for walleye of any place in the state. Better, even, than the more known walleye places to the west," said Chad Boyce, a fish biologist with the state game department. "It's the only place east of (Interstate) 95 where you can catch them.

"It's been an amazing success story. This is a huge loss to the angling community."

Boyce is nearing completion of the second year of a three -year study on the lake's walleye population.

The game department stocks about 48,000 fingerlings a year in the lake at a cost of almost $30,000 a year - fish, staff time and transportation from a hatchery, according to department spokeswoman Julia Dixon.

And many of the walleye are tagged.

"There are a bunch of tags out there swimming around that are worth $20 apiece to an angler who catches them," Boyce said. "We've got a lot of time and money in that place."

Boyce and other game department fisheries managers and biologists are responsible for stocking and studying fish on public access lakes throughout the state.

But with the doors shut, Whitehurst no longer will benefit from those efforts.

It essentially will become a private lake for those who live along its western shorelines.

Norfolk public utilities spokesman Harry Kenyon said his department is sending letters to 1,300 anglers who have permits to fish on the city's water supply lakes. Signs have been posted at the ramp.

Kenyon said the city currently has no plans to build a ramp at another site on the lake.

Bullen said anglers probably won't give up that easily.

"We're going to run a forum poll on our Web site to see how many anglers use the lake," he said. "Then we're going to go to the city and see what they can do.... It's too good of a fishing place to just give up."

lake whitehurst closing

I think that this is insane to say that the city has to close the ramp to public.I HAVE fished the norfolk city lakes since 1980,i have paid $5.00 each time i put my boat in the lake, not only in norfolk, but the lakes in suffolk as well. The city sent out 1300 notices to people that had yearly launch permits, hey were for either 20.00 or 40.00 each so tell me why when people spend hundreds of dollars to fish, paying taxes on all this fishing tackle and the airport says they need this little tiny piece of property for expansion this is a lot of bunk the people in hampton roads needs to let the politicans know that they are tired of their bungling of every thing they touch just like the light rail issue with HRT. Come on people lets all come together on this, an get this lake back to the people so we can fish. Lee get out lots more articles or opinions on this,we need more people to get behind this so we can fish please help

First of all it is airport

First of all it is airport property, so they can do with it what they like as a private corporation.

Secondly the land is restricted for safety reasons for people on the ground as well as in the plane. You don't want Al-Qaeda to have a nice shooting gallery down the runway, or to have a parking lot in the way of an aircraft that has overshot the runway.

Al-Qaeda

May be we should all go live in a whole. Something bad might happen. BoooHooo!

Lake Whitehurst closing

I have fished these lakes many times I scream foul !
it is not fair ,people such as the more privileged land owners along the lake
and groups such as botanical gardens get to use the lake
But the hard working /property tax paying individuals are now going to
be excluded ,hello is there anyone else out there that doesnt see a problem here
For me personally it is the really great place where myself and
my 2 small grandchildren to go in very calm waters
If I had the time
And if I had the energy
It was safe to be in a small canoe and fish! Its right next to my
house!

This lake belongs to the citizens of norfolk !

NOT the airport. The city of norfolk has an obligation to its citizens, not to take away a wonderful and very valuable recreational resource for its people. just because the airport wants its land back, is no excuse. the city could allow a public access site on its property at botanical gardens. many people have spent their lives enjoying this great resource. to take it away is more than WRONG ! its completely unfair to the people of norfolk. the civilians and more importantly at a time of war our military men and woman, many of whom live just across shore dr from the lake. please do the right thing.

Lake Whitehurst

Read the Sunday paper about the closing of public ramp at Whitehurst. Love the report about the reason for closing, "If we are going to build a parallel runway in the future, we can't allow public access at that site" How about closing it when you start the project and what about the land owners around the lake, are the going to still have access? Are there any filing on record for expanding? I think the state should ask for the money back that was spent to improve the fishing on the lake for public use, either from the city or the airport. I try to fish this lake once a week, main reason is the Walleye. Lets take the fisherman and the public interest in consideration here, Mr. Wayne Shank.

Help me understand

How an additional runway, when and if it ever happens, is going to require the closure of Lake Whitehurst to fishing. The planes go in and out over the lake as it is. What will be the difference? What will be the impace on the water quality of the lake? This is water that we drink, right? Will there be environmental studies done?

Lake Whitehurst

Yeah, sure...the airport and airline people really care about the public!
