Oakwood Elementary School has been named a “2009 National Blue Ribbon School,” according to an announcement today from the U.S. Department of Education.
The program recognizes public and private schools with at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that show dramatic improvements on state assessments. It also rewards schools that score in the top 10 percent in their state on reading and mathematics tests.
More than 300 schools nationwide received the designation, including 13 in Virginia. Oakwood was the only South Hampton Roads school on the list. Two Newport News schools, Hilton Elementary and Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, also were chosen.
Blue Ribbon Schools will be honored at a November ceremony in Washington. They also will receive a plaque and flag.
