Business had been slow for Andrew Copeland’s Web design business. So in January, he started working for FedEx, said his wife, Rhonda Copeland.

He was training a new driver Friday afternoon when the FedEx truck overturned, throwing him from the vehicle, she said. He died of his injuries, leaving his wife and 10-year-old son behind.

“We’re just taking it one day at a time,” Rhonda Copeland said Saturday. “It’s all we can do.”

The truck was traveling south on Fentress Airfield Road shortly before 4:30 p.m. Friday when the driver swerved slightly to avoid oncoming traffic, said Police Department spokesman Gus Mojica. The truck went off the road and turned over as the driver tried to return to the roadway, he said.

Paramedics transported the driver to the hospital for treatment. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, Mojica said.

Police have not filed charges against him.

Both men were working for one of FedEx Ground’s independent contractors, said spokesman David Westrick.

“Our thoughts and prayers and condolences go out to their families and friends,” he said. “Our goal right now is to figure out what happened and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Andrew Copeland was 38 and lived in Virginia Beach. His passion was technology, his wife said.

“He loved technology, computers and things like that,” Rhonda Copeland said. “He was real friendly, outgoing, always talking to people.”
