A raccoon has tested positive for rabies in James City County, according to Peninsula Health District officials.

The raccoon was captured Sept. 14 in the area of the 2200 block of Forge Road in Toano, said Dave Jordan, environmental health manager for the district.

Two dogs fought with the raccoon, but the dogs were up to date on their shots, Jordan said.

Anyone who believes they were exposed to the animal is being asked to call the Williamsburg Area Environmental Health Office at (757) 253-4813. After business hours, call (757) 253-1800.

Exposure includes such contact as a bite or scratch. Saliva from the raccoon near an open wound or the eyes, nose or mouth also is a concern.

Health officials were reminding residents to get their pets vaccinated against rabies and not to feed wildlife such as raccoons, foxes and skunks.
