SWAN QUARTER, N.C.

A ruptured sewer line spilled about 28,000 gallons of untreated sewage into the waters of Swan Quarter Bay, upstream from the Swan Quarter Ferry Canal entrance in Hyde County.

The spill is ongoing.

The North Carolina Division of Water Quality is investigating how the rupture occurred, and state environmental officials issued a precautionary advisory warning against swimming, according to a news release from the Division of Environmental Health.

State officials are monitoring the water quality and will lift the advisory when bacteriological test results come back within the state and Environmental Protection Agency standards.
