One person died this morning and a second person was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 664 that stopped traffic during rush hour.
At 6:23 a.m. a sedan traveling south crossed the median at Dock Landing Road and struck a PT Cruiser that was headed north in the left lane, said Sgt. T.T. Jasinowski, a spokesman for the Virginia State Police.
The woman driving the PT Cruiser was trapped inside her vehicle and had to be extricated. She was then flown to the hospital with serious injuries. Jasinowski would not say whether she had died.
The woman driving the sedan died at the scene, Jasinowski said.
Police were not releasing the identities of the two women pending notification of next of kin.
The northbound lanes of I-664 were shut down for about four hours following the crash so that investigators could recreate the crash, emergency dispatchers said.
With the help of Chesapeake police traffic was being diverted off the road onto the Dock Landing exit until shortly before 11 a.m., according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The fatal crash was the second of three that occurred this morning along I-664.
The first crash happened shortly before 6 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, Virginia State Police dispatchers confirmed. That crash backed up traffic to Dock Landing Road, where the fatal crash occurred.
A third crash, which was minor, was cleared before 9 a.m., according to VDOT.

CODY
I'm very sorry to hear about Cody, my condolences to his family and friends.
The other driver
The other driver was a man. His name was Thompson Cody Weeks. He was 53, a father and grandfather. He was on his way to work to begin a new job. (first day). He was Cody to his friends and the people who loved him.He had been a paramedic for 13 yars in MO. as a volunteer. He also died in surgery.
Not the first
I do not drive 664 very much but I have seen some bad accidents. This is not the first to cross the median and kill someone. I think some trees or guard rails would help a lot.
agree, there should be a barrier
Trees cause fatalities and guard rails cost too much and have to be changed every five to ten years. Shrubs on the other hand create a soft barrier and require little if any maintenance. Azalea bushes could be the answer.
Not the first
Trees like on Shore Drive. That way when somebody hits one and dies their family can sue the city. It's happened.
I agree
I agree there needs to be something put down the middle of the interstate. Travel down I-95 in Northern NC, and there are a series of cables that run down the middle to prevent just this type of accident. Sorry for the loss to both families.
GUARD RAIL!?
VDOT, why does 664 not have a guard rail like the other interstates?
Update
Will there be an update to the second crash? How did it happen? When I drove by it looked like another car crossed the median and hit another car head on.
Will the Virginia Pilot continue their A+ reporting..."cough cough"
