Golf

Southeastern District tournament

Taylor Dichiara finished at 2-over 74 to help put Western Branch in the lead following the first round of the Southeastern District tournament at Sleepy Hole.

Teammates James Baldwin, Nick Iuliano and Brandon Wharam chipped in rounds of 76, 77 and 78, respectively, as the Bruins posted a 305.

Grassfield’s Brad Kennon fired a 1-under 71 to take the individual lead in the tournament. The Grizzlies are in a second-place tie with Great Bridge, trailing the leaders by eight strokes. The Wildcats were paced by Erik Ruse, who sits in fifth place at 3 over.

John Dawson and Lauren Coughlin are a shot behind Kennon in the individual standings at even-par 72. Both are from Hickory – which is in fourth place.

Today’s final round starts at 9 a.m.

Girls volleyball

#3 Kellam d. #9 First Colonial, 25-14, 25-17, 25-19

The versatility of sophomore Cheyanne James powered the host Knights (6-3) to a sweep of the Patriots (6-2) Tuesday. James produced 14 kills, 10 digs and two blocks, while freshman setter Paxton Crooks registered 34 assists and six digs.

“Cheyanne has really improved defensively to complement her power hitting,” Kellam coach Caleb Adams said.

“Our passing was a big key to this win and Paxton is emerging as a consistent setter.”

Tessa Bivens also provided a defensive and service boost, totaling 18 digs and five aces. The match didn’t count in the Beach District standings. Beach play begins Thursday.

#2 Cox d. Bayside, 25-16, 25-10, 25-9

The Falcons (7-2) breezed 25-16, 25-10 and 25-9 in their final tuneup for district play. Chelsea Blanford struck for eight kills and Kelsey Page equaled that output and added three blocks. Emily Mordecai chipped in four kills and four blocks.

Emily Bunting had four aces and Rachael Wyatt went 12 for 12 serving for the Cavaliers.

#4 Grassfield d. Deep Creek, 25-13, 26-24, 25-10

Mallory Obennour had 13 kills, Allison Munter had 20 assists, and Katie Johnson had 10 kills for the Grizzlies.

#7 Great Bridge d. Oscar Smith, 25-14, 25-12, 25-17

#8 Hickory d. King’s Fork, 25-10, 25-7, 25-8

Norfolk Collegiate d. Nansemond-Suffolk, 25-23, 21-25, 27-25, 13-25, 15-6

Tiana Addison totaled seven kills and five blocks, while Lauren Klevan added 25 digs.

Indian River d. Nansemond River, 25-18, 25-10, 25-19

Alfreida Salkey, Morgan Boyd, and Mary Strinkle combined for 22 kills for the Braves.

Western Branch d. Lakeland, 25-14, 25-14, 25-20

Stephanie Tysor had three blocks with 12 service points, while Morgan Webber and Amber Channell combined for 10 kills for the Bruins.

Tallwood d. Green Run, 25-15, 25-13, 25-21

Meghan Peji had 10 kills with seven digs, Michelle Vanderwerff had 12 digs, and Shannon Probert had five assists with four digs for the Lions.

Kempsville d. Salem, 25-13, 25-22, 25-14

Morgan Leaks had six kills with five aces and Courtney O’Connors had six kills for the Chiefs.

Southampton Academy d. Richmond Christian, 25-23, 25-15, 25-19

Jaime Bradshaw got 14 serves in for the Raiders.

Norfolk Academy d. Hampton Roads, 25-14, 25-21, 25-11

Emma Tennang had seven kills, Liz Affronti had four service aces and Krissy Grosline had seven kills with two service aces for the Bulldogs.

Southampton d. Brunswick, 25-9, 25-10, 25-14

Boys volleyball

#1 Great Bridge d. Oscar Smith, 25-12, 25-19, 25-15

The unbeaten Wildcats reeled off their seventh consecutive victory. Alec Smith contributed seven kills and 14 digs.

Ryan Iaquinto made 13 kills and setter Tim FitzPatrick tallied 29 assists.

#2 Cox d. Bayside, 25-18, 25-21, 25-13

Joe Heim’s 23 assists and five aces triggered a victory for the Falcons (4-0). Max Treadway registered 10 kills and James Convery made eight digs.

#3 First Colonial d. Kellam, 25-12, 25-9, 25-18

The Patriots (6-2) swept thanks to Alex Dye’s six kills and three blocks.

David Wenzel added seven kills and four blocks. Chase Holderby amassed 14 kills and 14 assists.

#6 Western Branch d. Lakeland, 25-19, 25-21, 27-25

Scott Matthews sparked the victors with nine kills and five aces. Jay James recorded 38 assists. Nijel Jamble had eight kills.

Kempsville d. #9 Salem, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 15-13

Jame Komornik had 10 kills and Cody Christie had 10 kills with 10 blocks for the Chiefs.

Salem dropped to 3-4 overall and hosts Bayside in its Beach opener on Thursday.

#5 Nansemond River d. Indian River, 25-16, 25-19, 13-25, 25-16

Josh Howard had 30 assists with three digs and Tyler Brown had 13 digs for the Warriors.

Chris Campbell had nine kills, Will Midkiff had five kills with two blocks, and Curtis Stallings had 13 assists with four aces and a block for the Grizzlies.

Nate Wrenn had 12 digs and Joe Lonergan added 10 kills for the Cavaliers (3-6).
