PAY

I wonder if they're gonna pay those who work their full day's pay if they close early. Anybody want to bet that they are???

USPS FAILURE NOT DUE TO THE PEOPLE

Over the years, I have had good and bad experiences with the USPS, FedEx, UPS and DHL. By far, the worst trouble I had in getting something delivered was DHL. I vowed never to use them again and I'm glad they're not in the US domestic delivery business now. But as I've stated, I've had hiccups, encountered rude people, had to stand in long lines, etc with all of the carriers. And on the other hand, excluding DHL, I have had experiences where the USPS, FedEx and UPS went beyond the call of duty in terms of getting something delivered to me. It's not the people, it's the advance of technology that is eating away at mail delivery business. Years ago, maybe 10% of my communications was via the Internet, the rest was by mail. Now today, that ratio has changed to 10% via mail, the rest via the Internet. If you multiply that by hundreds of thousands doing the same as I, that's gotta hurt financially.

precisely right. The

precisely right. The internet has changed the nature of the game.

USPS

Long lines, slow workers, rude workers, postage constantly going up -- I avoid them like a plague. In my neighborhood, we get others' mail and vice-versa. The Acredale Station in Kempsville is among the worse! I have been there one time in 10 years, and I did not have any choice that time.

Didn't Obama refer to the..

Postal Service as the 'one that needs help' (words to that effect anyways) in comparing it to UPS and Fed Ex, and all while trying to trump up his health care proposals? Well, take a good, long, hard look folks! I found the referecnes to the attitudes particularly intersting. But all that said, be careful when the prponents say that certain provisions are not part of the plan NOW, like access for illegals, forcing private insurance companies out, etc. Govt services and entitlements are always incrementally increased with the passage of time.

You've been warned!

proof's in the puddin'

USPS is going down, plain and simple. The post office building on Kempsville Rd near Indian River like so many others, looks like a jail from the 1950's, an eyesore at best. Inevitably we will allowed to "opt out" of the pile of bulk garbage thats placed in my box on a daily basis. And that's the lifeblood of the system now. Arrogant people with a limited skill set who are grossly overpaid. As far as Monday goes yep I'll be workin'....on a cold beverage, drowning bait about 20 miles offshore.

who cares!

I try not to use the US Post office, why bother! They are rude, lazy and dont get the job done right! I sent a letter to NY, it took three weeks to get there!! What is this the pony express!!!!! I pay my bills on line, and send out Christmas gifts at the box store, why because the lines are faster because people dont just stand around doing nothing!!! Stamps go up in price all the time, why?? They get paid too much to do nothing!

a LOT of nothing

"They get paid too much to do nothing!"

Lovely, one letter gets delayed and you think the whole postal service is useless. This is the type of crystal clear thinking that allowed us to land on Alpha Centauri in the 60's . . . No commercial service can match the price and convenience of USPS daily home delivery, especially when we're talking letters vice packages. No commercial service will bother with delivery to rural or out of the way places. The USPS helped to build America. A ubiquitous material (<-- as opposed to virtual) communication network like the post office is vital to growth and prosperity. Like any institution it needs constant assessment and reform; lets do that. But the idea of throwing it out based on the anecdotes of a few malcontents, no matter how piercing their analytical skills may be (heh), seems silly.

death spiral

a classic sign of a business in decline is cutting back hours. Hopefully this quasi government boondoggle will be gone soon.

You must be working monday!

A simple story about the USPS setting holiday hours and some people use it as a springboard to bash something they know nothing about. I just retired from the USPS (with a very nice pension and benefits I might add) after over 28 years. Sure the competition has heated up but the USPS has adjusted and contiues to be compeitive at a lower cost to ship than the other companies. If the USPS disapears you may still get good mail service here from a private company where it would be profitable to do business for them but what about those in rural areas? Do you actually think anyone is going to deliver their mail where the profit margin would not be enough? Would some people have to pay more for postage to fill in that gap? The system is not perfect but if you or anyone anywhere in the country puts a first class stamp on a letter they can have it delivered to anyone anywhere else in the country. Come on, how great is that? I don't have time to go into detail but being a gov't org. puts a whole lots of restraints and restrictions on the USPS that other compamies are not bothered with. I'm still guessing you have to work monday!
