The Virginia State Police are investigating allegations of embezzlement from state Del. Bobby Mathieson's campaign fund.

"It's an active criminal investigation," said State Police Lt. Steve Webb.

In a news release, Mathieson said he filed a police report Thursday concerning discrepancies and misuse of campaign funds by a staffer.

Mathieson, a Democrat, is seeking re-election to the 21st District seat. He is being challenged by Republican Virginia Beach City Councilman Ron Villaneuva.

"This is hitting me like a ton of bricks," Mathieson said.

The staff member, who has worked for him since 2007, was fired Tuesday, Mathieson said. He said a "substantial" amount of money was involved.

According to state campaign finance reports, Mathieson had $65,308 on hand at the end of June. The next reports are due Tuesday.

Mathieson contacted the State Board of Elections about the situation, said Secretary Nancy Rodrigues, who declined further comment.
