What's in a name? Chic's Beach

Posted to: Community News News Virginia Beach Virginia Beach News

VIRGINIA BEACH

Chic's (or Chick's) Beach wasn't given its nickname because that's where the chicks are. That much is clear. But a decades-old debate about the name of the stretch of beach and surrounding neighborhood east of Little Creek Amphibious Base remains lively among residents of this eclectic community.

For years, old-timers refused to even recognize the nickname. The neighborhood was Chesapeake Beach, nothing less.

News accounts and letters to the editor of The Virginian-Pilot reported the dispute frequently through the 1990s. Chic's was undignified, some said. Made it sound cheesy, they said.

That has waned to a certain extent.

The Chesapeake Beach Civic League only recently began to recognize the nickname. It now sells $15 T-shirts with a CXB logo and those place-name letter decals with CXB in large letters and Chic's Beach, Va., in small print underneath that go for $3.

But league President Heidi Janicki said she's still mindful to respect the neighborhood's full name.

"When I talk about the civic league I always use Chesapeake Beach," said Janicki, who moved to the neighborhood about 10 years ago but vacationed there as a child.

Maps of the area identify Chesapeake Beach as the region east of the amphibious base to Baylake Beach, less than a mile away, and north to Shore Drive. Baylake Pines is the nearest neighborhood to the east. Older maps, dating back to the 18th century, identify the area as Pleasure House, likely named for The Pleasure House, a tavern that catered to Confederate soldiers.

Chesapeake Beach popped up on maps around World War I and has since become an established residential neighborhood.

The shortened Chic's Beach derives from Luther "Chic" Ledington, who with his wife ran a hot dog stand on the beach where Alexander's on the Bay now sits. He competed with "Buster's" down the way, but the nickname Buster's never stuck.

How the K was added to the nickname remains a bit of a mystery, but it appears to have followed the establishment of places like Chick's Beach Cafe, Chick's Oyster Bar and the Chick's Beach Texaco.

(The Pilot's rule is to use Chick's with a K, but it is currently reconsidering that in light of the historical derivation.)

For longtime residents, such as Wally Damon, 59, the dispute remains in full throttle.

"Chic's is not the nickname of Chesapeake Beach," he said, rather adamantly.

The only Chic's Beach he will acknowledge is a small spot of sand where the hot dog stand used to be.

"That is the only Chic's Beach. That's it," he said.

Live with it

Well, I was born in '59, and it's CHICS BEACH, so get over it.

Fact checker

"Older maps, dating back to the 18th century, identify the area as Pleasure House, likely named for The Pleasure House, a tavern that catered to Confederate soldiers."

Hmmm...There were no Confederate Soldiers in the 18th Century.

Your comment

I've sent a note to the editor of the piece noting your question. David M. Putney, PilotOnline producer

CLASSY PLACE

no matter what the semantics are..Chik's Beach is a cool place to live along Shore Drive east of the amphib base...

Meyera Statue

Word on the street is that a Meyera Oberndorf statue (King Neptune size)is going to be erected on Chick's Beach.

I'm all for it. The statue might frighten tourists if it's too close to the Oceanfront resort area.

Oscar's Beach

Does anyone remember "Oscar's Beach" from about 45 years ago? If you do, please refresh my memory as to exactly where it was located!

Love it!

I was born and raised in Norfolk..went to Granby High School....but I came to Chick's Beach often in the summer in the 60's.

We've now lived at Chick's Beach for 29 yrs.

It's wonderful.....kinda like a rural city. No sidewalks, people jogging and walking their dogs, a million dollar house next to a Shack!

It does make me laugh when someone who lives near the Lesner Bridge tells me........Oh, I live at Chick's Beach too!

Anyway........love it!

The name is the name

There's nothing insulting about calling the neighborhood Chick's Beach. It's got an easy ring to it. Shall we start referring to Virginia Tech as "Virginia Polytechnic Institute" or "VPI". When you say "Tech", people know what you're talking about. When you say "Chesapeake Beach", many people say "where"?

I worked for Chic in 66,

I worked for Chic in 66, cleaned the beach and rented rafts. Very few people knew the origin of his nickname. Before WWII he was A Golden Gloves battam weight fighter called the Chicken Man. Hw was about 5'3" and still only weighed 125lbs when he was in his 60's and pound for pound one of the strongest men I ever met. Oh and hi Wally.

Mr Bainer had a tractor me and Bill Hortsman used to pull a trailer on the beach to haul the cans.Oh yea if you remember the high bar at chics your definitly a local or the wooden bridge across lake pleasure house. How about the rope swing at graveyard point, the ymca past baylake beach.Ever climed the tower down towards the rocks? Allens Grill/The Casino/Antique Barn/Heins Field/ These memories live on for the true locals of chics beach.By the way I have a hat from the casino that spelled chics with a x!!!!CHIX BEACH for what its worth What a great place to grow up.
