NORFOLK
Brandon Bochenski's goal with 14:06 left in the third period broke a scoreless tie as Norfolk defeated Manchester 2-0 for its first win of the season before a crowd of 2,948 at Scope on Saturday.
Bochenski's goal came when a Juraj Simek shot ricocheted off Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatcoff, then bounced off Bochenski's leg and into the net.
To that point, the game was had been a battle of goaltenders; the Admirals' Dustin Tokarski stopped all 26 of the Monarchs' shots, while Zatcoff made 37 saves.
Norfolk got an empty-net goal from Ryan Craig with 40 seconds left to wrap up scoring.
The Admirals open a three-game road swing on Wednesday at Albany.
Note: Forward Radek Smolenak, Norfolk's third-leading goal-scorer last season, made his season debut with the Admirals on Saturday after the parent Tampa Bay Lightning claimed him off waivers from Chicago, where he played one game.
Smolenak had 24 goals last season in 71 games. He also recorded 25 assists and 165 penalty minutes.
