Candidates for sheriff

Posted to: Editorials Opinion

The race for Virginia Beach sheriff — the highest profile of next week’s contested elections for South Hampton Roads’ constitutional offices — offers two smart law enforcement veterans, both of whom are qualified to be sheriff of Virginia’s largest city.

Virginia Beach Police Captain John Bell, a Democrat, has risen through the ranks of the department, to precinct commander, head of the detective bureau and now senior captain and head of professional standards. He wants the sheriff’s office to be more aggressive in alternative sentencing, arguing — correctly — that addressing the underlying causes of crime will reduce the chance that an inmate comes back to jail on new charges.

His opponent, however, has an unmatched ability to see where his city and state need to be and the resolve to get them there. Sen. Ken Stolle’s breadth of experience — detective, sergeant, lawyer, chairman of Virginia’s Crime Commission and 18 years as state senator — offers his native city the kind of savvy that voters should not dismiss.

Stolle, a Republican, is a problem-solver, a deal-cutter, a weaver of consensus. His direct, plainspoken style has earned him a reputation as an honest broker with Republicans and Democrats. If his methods are sometimes heavy-handed, he has largely used his considerable powers to benefit his community and his state.

He sponsored “truth-in-sentencing” legislation as part of Gov. George Allen’s initiative to end parole. He instituted criminal justice reforms that allow men and women wrongly convicted of crimes to clear their names when exonerating evidence emerges after their trials. He’s been in nearly every jail in Virginia, knows the ins and outs of the state budget for law enforcement better than anyone, and has an excellent working relationship with retiring Sheriff Paul Lanteigne, Beach Police Chief Jake Jacocks and the City Council.

Stolle was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease four years ago. “Under medication,” he said, his illness “is completely controlled” and hasn’t hampered his work in the least. In fact, in the past year Stolle helped negotiate the sale of the Norfolk-Southern right of way and has been tireless in his efforts to find solutions to the region’s transportation problems.

Stolle has been one of Hampton Roads’ most valuable players in the legislature. Richmond’s loss should be Virginia Beach’s gain. For Virginia Beach commonwealth’s attorney, Harvey Bryant is seeking re-election to the job he has held since April 2000. Bryant, a conservative Republican, does not offer plea bargains on cases involving drug dealers or crimes committed using firearms. He is ethical and no-nonsense and deserves voters’ support.

Norfolk sheriff Sheriff Bob McCabe’s 16-year tenure has been marked by a strong stewardship of limited resources, producing one of the lowest operating costs of any municipal jail. Despite almost constant crowded conditions, Norfolk’s jail consistently earns perfect scores on health and safety from the state. McCabe has done well by his 450 full-time employees and has earned re-election.

Chesapeake sheriff John Newhart has built a department that ably carries out its primary mission of running the jail and providing court security.  Newhart  has been on the job since 1970 and faces his first election challenge since 1977. Still active, and a political force in the city, he manages a $36 million budget and has a staff of 420. We see no reason to change the leadership.

Portsmouth sheriff Independent David L. Cherry is challenging Democratic Sheriff Bill Watson, who’s running for a second term. Cherry, who’s spent the past 30 years helping run his family’s carpet dealership, could grow into the job if surrounded by experienced law enforcement officers. But his own relatively short experience with the volunteer auxiliary units of the city Sheriff’s Department and Police Department isn’t enough to recommend displacing the controversial Watson.

Suffolk sheriff Raleigh Isaacs, Suffolk’s long-time sheriff, has served the city and his employees well through the years. His experience in local law enforcement and his deep connection to the city argue strongly for his return to office over an opponent whose unrealistic ambitions would lead to disruption and dissension in a well-functioning department.

Vote for Capt. Bell

For real leadership and excellence, Vote for Capt. Bell on November 3rd. He is ready and able to serve the citizens of Virginia Beach.

Crook

For someone who does an excellent job of cheating the taxpayers, vote John bell. He will continue to use your tax dollars to fund his campaign.

Save your personal attacks

While Stolle has run a positive race, Bell and his supporters (like Mrs. W below) have been slinging mud and campaigning on ridiculous and personal attacks against Stolle an his family because Bell has no issues. We don't need a classless politician like Bell as Sheriff.

Let's Talk About.....

I find it interesting and disappointing that no one has addressed the fact that Mr. Stolle has Parkinson's Disease. Once again, this disease does not get better, it gets worse. Has anyone seen Michael J. Fox and Muhammad Ali lately? They're not out running for Sheriff. Mr. Stolle is already show signs of slowing down.

Vote for John Bell for Virginia Beach Sheriff on November 3rd.

Ignorant

First of all you know that "real" voters don't read these comments, right. It's only for insiders, staff and the people who have nothing better to do. You have jumped on the bandwagon with Bell in personally attacking Stolle and his family. The Bell campaign has been orchestrated by a bunch of fools who like their joss have little regard for ethics and the law. You support a man who has been found GUILTY of misusing taxpayer dollars. He's gonna be transferred out of Professional Standards - but not until after the Election, because the Chief is afraid of his own shadow. Bell has broken the law, yet you don't care. He supports letting criminals of his choosing to be let out on the streets, but that doesn't hothe you. Bell's message is terrible and won't sell in Virginia Beach. A Sheriff cannot take a soft-on-crime and criminal apologist stance. It's fun making your campign defend itself. And by the way, how's your aadministrative experience account doing? Democrat politicos have been laughing histarically about how sad the Bell campaign is.

Cheating the Taxpayers

Let me just remind everyone that John Bell was recently disciplined by the Chief of Police after he was found guilty of misusing "government resources for political purposes in his bid for sheriff" after an investigation by the Virginia Beach City Auditor. This has been reported in the Pilot at least 3 times. This is a guy who's in charge of making sure police follow the law -- and Bell's response was that he "unknowingly violated" the law. He's either lying, incompetent or both. That's the kind of Sheriff I want.

A Closed Matter

First, the matter was not for public disclosure it was leaked prematurely to the press. All persons involved have been cautioned concerning the Privacy Act. The matter has been resolved by the Chief of Police and accusations of Capt. Bell of being a crook are premature and extremely inaccurate.

Please read the Wavy 10 News article by Kay Young

A crook is a crook

He still broke the law. So after a murderer serve his time - you say it's a closed matter too?

Pilot Disappointment

If Stolle is a great candidate, then why did he fall asleep during the Wavy 10 interview on Oct 29th? Watch the video at 2:25 and 5:20 minutes of the interview, Stolle falls asleep. Is this the person that Virginia Beach should vote for? Absolutely not. If he is falling asleep on tv, then he will fall asleep on the job.

The Pilot presented reason to vote for Stolle, but actually those reasons purpose why Virginia Beach should not vote for him. Ladies and Gentleman, Parkison's Disease does not get better it gets worse. It is clear that this disease is affecting Mr. Stolle, and will affect his ability to serve as Virginia Beach Sheriff or even control the city's outrageous crime.

Again, Capt. John Bell is ready, willing and able to serve as Sheriff. For a man that will not fall asleep on the job, Vote for Captain John Bell for Sheriff.

Pilot Disappointment

I have watched the video of the interview 3 times now. Not once did Sen. Stolle fall asleep. Ms. W, to bring up the disease and how it would affect Sen. Stolle's ability to be Sheriff is a low blow.
