Chesapeake police charge man with felony child abuse

CHESAPEAKE

A man left to care for a 3-year-old Chesapeake girl has been charged with felony child abuse and aggravated malicious wounding, police said.

Police and medics went to the 3400 block of Clover Meadows Drive around 8 p.m. Wednesday on a report of an unresponsive child, according to a news release from the Chesapeake Police Department.

The girl was taken to Maryview Hospital and later transferred to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters for severe head trauma. She remains in critical condition.

According to police, 38-year-old Leon Lamar Surgeon was caring for the child while her mother was at work. Police charged him Thursday. No other information was available.
