The Atlantic Coast Conference's head of football officials has confirmed what Virginia Tech's coaches said over the past two days: Georgia Tech should have been penalized for multiple illegal blocks in its 28-23 win over the Hokies on Oct. 17.
Secondary coach Torrian Gray claimed on Sunday that among the 11 plays Virginia Tech sent to the ACC for review from that game, the league agreed there were four illegal blocks on free safety Kam Chancellor alone. Head coach Frank Beamer said on Monday morning "there were more."
Yellow Jackets coach Paul Johnson, a man with a reputation for bristling at criticism, fired back after his team's practice Monday.
"They got out-schemed. So, it's illegal to out-scheme them, I guess," he said. "We blocked them the same way we blocked them a year ago and they weren't complaining when they won."
Doug Rhoads, who oversees the league's officials, said the Hokies coaches shouldn't have disclosed the conference's admission of mistakes and he wouldn't specify the number of missed calls.
"I would only say that Virginia Tech, just as every team on that weekend, submitted plays for my review," Rhoads said. "Out of those plays, there are a few the officials missed, a few that were the right call and a few that were judgment calls somewhere in the middle. "
Johnson said he also submitted about a dozen plays to the ACC that he thought should have been called holding on the Hokies.
"It's part of the game," he said. "Nobody from the conference called and told us that we did anything illegal."
While it's unclear which plays Virginia Tech is upset about, there are at least two obvious contenders. Georgia Tech's second touchdown was set up by a 31-yard run by quarterback Josh Nesbitt - a play sprung by a block on Chancellor.
The Hokies' senior was running toward Nesbitt when he was blocked at the knees by a receiver coming from the outside. Chancellor never saw him and crumpled when hit. That would appear to be the definition of an illegal crackback block, which is punished by a 15-yard penalty.
"They're coming from out of my vision then cracking down on me or chopping me from the side or from behind," Chancellor said. "I'm telling the referee what he's doing and he's not calling nothing. That's when it got frustrating to me."
Another questionable block occurred in the final two minutes of the first quarter, when defensive tackle John Graves was tied up with the Jackets' left guard - hitting him high - and the left tackle took out his legs.
That would seem to be the definition of an illegal chop block. The play ended with Graves' legs twisted and tangled under the offensive tackle, resulting in an ankle injury that kept him sidelined for the final three quarters.
"When it's dangerous plays, we need to get that out of college football," Beamer said. "That's the ones that worry you, plays that could hurt a player."
Rhoads said officials from the game would not be suspended but the missed calls will be reflected in each official's season rating. The ACC grades its officials after each game and evaluates them at the end of the year. A crew from the SEC recently was suspended for making key mistakes.
"I don't want to leave any implication that when you miss serious plays that involve player safety there aren't repercussions, because there are," Rhoads said. "Every guy is going to make mistakes. Receivers drop balls, coaches make bad calls, officials make mistakes. But if there's a pattern, we use the rating system to determine if each official gets a postseason game or if he's even retained."
Johnson thinks this is all much ado about nothing. He said he hears complaints every week about the blocking in his option offense. His scheme relies heavily on taking out defenders' legs - which is legal in certain circumstances.
He believes the criticism is mostly sour grapes, especially in the Hokies' case.
"It's two weeks ago," Johnson said. "Why are they worried about it now?"

What now VT?
UNC 20 - VT 17..... darn those ACC officials for costing us ANOTHER game. Since we can't claim UNC chop-blocked, let's go with missed holding calls, no... offsides... no, illegal procedures... Obviously, if the games were being called fair, we'd be undefeated!!!
GT/VA Tech
It is not surprising what Chancellor had to say since he has been running his big mouth for months about how he had our offense "figured" out. I only have this to say that an over-rated team got beat by a "much better team and a better coach". If you haven't noticed GT gets more than its fair share of bad calls every game.
Chop Blocking GT vs VT
It's not surprising to hear the sour grapes from the losing side. There is always an excuse.
Officials miss calls every game for both sides. Further, in reviewing film in slow motion, holding or other penalties could be called on every play. If GT's blocking scheme was so illegal it would be outlawed.
GT made half time adjustments to put a blocker on the Safety (Chancellor) every play. The blocks were in plan view, not hideon in the line. If they were so flagrant they would have been called.
Playing college football in the early 70's,these blocks were legal and expected. We learned to play them off with the useof our hands. I don't know that knee injuries were any more prevelant then than now.
It is interesting that VT would make public these comments. It's almost as if they need an excuse for losing.
absolutely
Georgia Tech won the game fair and square and I did not come away from the game thinking, "We wuz robbed!" Instead, I thought, "There they go again." Seems like Tech just cannot get over the hump, but at least they're playing quality opponents, which is the only way to get better.
However.
If GT is regularly using illegal, dangerous blocks I'm glad the VT coaching staff brought it to the ACC's attention. Hopefully they can save some kid's knees.
What got my dander up is the glee with which some people attack VT. It's really unbecoming.
VT/GT Game
CS I don't disagree that if there was anything illegal done during the game it should be reported and stopped. However, I think it reflects poorly on us that if as you say, the GT offense is based on illegal blocking that we are the only ones that make a public outcry after GT beat us. Also, I checked and GT had played seven other teams prior to us an none of them has complained publicly about GT's play. I just think it should have been registered with league officials quitely as are all other questionable call issues handled every other week, and let unbiased officials handle it. Complaining about it in the press publicly takes away our credibility and looks like we can dish it out when we win but aren't capable of taking it when we lose. We need to show more character than this.
Follow-Up
I threw the bait out there and got what I expected...our 8 times (so far out of 17 posts) poster (bleeding VT colors) needs to get a life outside VT (and probably a job); and, bill020 got it right and I respect him...
hey hokie haters
Coach Beamer never said, "We lost because the officials missed some calls." He said, "When it's dangerous plays, we need to get that out of college football," Beamer said. "That's the ones that worry you, plays that could hurt a player."
Take your Hokie-hating malarkey back to Charlottesville or whatever other town that doesn't feature a football team that's won ten games each of the last five years (in other words, anywhere else but Los Angeles, Austin or Blacksburg).
GT/VT Game
I am embarassed that we can't take the loss like adults. Everyone knows that there are missed calls in football every week and we look like soar losers to make such a public spectacle of ourselves just because we lost. Maybe there were some missed calls, but the let's face it, we just flat got beat. The correct way to handle this is let the coaching staff register any complaints with the ACC and let them judge and handle it. GA Tech has played numerous other teams this year and no one else is publicly whining about their play so why should we? Man up Hokies!
Legit VT fans
Kudos to those of you who are VT fans and are willing to take this loss like real men. You are right...behavior like this from a head coach is embarrassing. What about the other teams GT has beaten this year? I don't hear any of them complaining. It's not like VT has the squeakiest of images to be going after other football programs. And do yourselves a favor VT fans...stop comparing your program to USC and Texas based on the meaningless stat of 10-win seasons. I can hear people in Austin and LA laughing. The difference between VT and Texas/USC is that the latter have actually won national championships before...and will probably do so again. VT never has and never will. You might be top dog in VA in football, but that's about it. Other state schools have way better athletic departments (not to mention way better academic reputations).
here's an idea
Instead of bashing another team and its fan, why don't you tell us all what school with the awesome football program you attended?
Discount the 10-win seasons all you want, but Tech finished in the top 20 each of the last five years, three times in the top ten. Smarter football minds than both of ours seem to believe Tech is a pretty good football program.
