BLACKSBURG
Virginia Tech said there would be no Georgia Tech hangover, but it certainly looked like it Thursday night as the Hokies stumbled, fumbled and fell flat against North Carolina.
The headache will be far worse this morning for the No. 14 Hokies – national title contenders two weeks ago – when they ponder a 20-17 loss to the Tar Heels, who had yet to win an ACC game.
Tech lost on a Casey Barth field goal as time expired after the Hokies’ star freshman tailback, Ryan Williams, fumbled with 2:02 to play . UNC took over at the Hokies’ 24-yard line.
Williams, who ran for 96 yards, was inconsolable, burying his head in his hands on the sideline and answering questions with a tear-streaked face.
“There probably isn’t anything you can do to lift me up,” said Williams, who hadn’t lost a fumble. “I feel like I kind of took the game away from us today. It was on the line and it was in my hands, and I fumbled.”
But the blame is hardly Williams’ alone. There were plenty of other chances for the No. 14 Hokies (5-3, 3-2) .
Tech was inside the Tar Heels’ 40 on five of six first-half possessions, but couldn’t score . The crowd booed louder with each failure. “I don’t think we came out flat,” Beamer said. “They took it to us.”
Meanwhile, the Hokies’ defense, in a repeat of the Oct. 17 loss at Georgia Tech , couldn’t get off the field when it counted. They allowed North Carolina to convert 10 of 19 third downs – and a big fourth down.
Even after being shut out in the first two quarters and trailing in the fourth, Tech appeared poised to sneak away with a victory. Cornerback Rashad Carmichael intercepted UNC’S T.J. Yates with 13:13 remaining, setting up the Hokies at the Tar Heels’ 5 .
Quarterback Tyrod Taylor ran over a defender at the goal line for his second rushing touchdown of the game , putting Tech ahead 17-14. But UNC (5-3, 1-3) answered with a 16-play, 78-yard drive that used nearly nine minutes and ended in a tying field goal with 2:52 remaining.
Carmichael, beaten on a first-half touchdown pass , helped the drive with a pass interference penalty. Yates then completed a 17-yard pass on third-and-7 and a 19-yard strike on fourth-and-7.
“We’ll look at it and see where we could’ve been better defensively down the stretch,” Beamer said. “That’s a concern.”
Maybe more worrisome is the Hokies’ inability to capitalize on excellent field position for a second straight game.
After David Wilson’s 42-yard kickoff return early in the fourth quarter, Taylor hit passes of 13 and 16 yards, setting up what appeared to be a 20-yard touchdown run by Williams that would’ve tied that game at 14.
Instead, the Hokies were flagged for holding and settled for a field goal.
With that, suddenly a season that began with national title hopes now has almost no chance of even a Coastal Division crown. Beamer is reduced to telling his team to play for a sixth consecutive 10-win season, which would require winning the final four regular season games and a bowl.
“It could’ve been better, certainly, but you’ve got to play every Saturday,” Beamer said.
His players, however, will be driven by more than their record the rest of the way.
“The motivation is ... I don’t want to feel like this any more,” linebacker Cody Grimm said.
“He took the words right out of my mouth,” said Williams.

TECH
you can't blame the refs this time frank, they gave you at least 1 td when it was clear taylor fumbled before the ball crossed the line
ignorance
The replay was not clear, otherwise the call on the field would have been overturned.
Not once did Beamer say the refs cost Virginia Tech the game against Georgia Tech. He expressed concern that the latter team's illegal blocking would hurt someone. I'm sorry you think that's a bad thing.
Not sure why you have such a problem with Tech, but it's been my experience that those who make gleeful or sarcastic remarks when Tech fall short (or even when it doesn't) never even went to college. And, no, ECPI doesn't count.
Good strategy Tech fan
Denigrate people who didn't go to college - classy. Besides, people who are serious about going to college in VA apply to VT as a backup only. UVA, W&M, Richmond, W&L, JMU et al >>>>>> VT. All VT has is its football team and that ain't much to speak of either.
not denegrating them
I have no issue with people who don't go to college. There are plenty of great careers that require highly intelligent people without degrees. Most of the people with whom I serve in the Army, for example, have never been to college. My point was that if you didn't go to a rival school to Tech's, why do you feel the need to talk about Tech with such venom?
You, on the other hand, are denigrating a university that enjoys a great national and international reputation for math, computer science, engineering and business, among other things. It is also a leading research university.
As a Tech alumnus I don't care for UVa's sports teams, but I never talk trash about the university itself. I don't need to tear others down to make mine look good.
Duh
So if you do not like Tech football or how they play you are an uneducated redneck. Is that it ?
And what does graduating from college have to do with intelligence. Many of the college graduates I know are hard pressed to form a coherent sentence. A diploma or degree is not an indicator of intelligence. That fact is proven every day in Richmond and Washington D.C.
ignorant of what ignorance means
Ignorance means not knowing. It has nothing to do with intelligence. I believe I am at least as intelligent as the average bear but I am completely ignorant of astrophysics, financial derivatives and 18th century French poetry. My point about ignorance was the poster's comment about the replay and the comment about Beamer. He didn't know what he was talking about (i.e. ignorant) because the referees, who know a lot more about football than most of us do, called the play a touchdown and upheld it when reviewed. He also insinuated that Beamer blamed the officials for Tech's losing to GT. Again, he was igorant of the facts. Beamer never said Tech lost because of the officials.
A little quick math
Virginia Tech loses to North Carolina at home.....
North Carolina loses to Virginia big at home.....
Virginia loses to William and Mary a lowly FCS team at home.....
According to that logic William and Mary is better than Virginia Tech :)
And people thought that Tech was a National Title Contender har har....
no excuses, great game tar heels
Great job Tar Heels - UNC beat Tech last night. It's that simple and I make no excuses for the result. I'm terribly disappointed, but then again when I was a student we were happily surprised when we ended the season with a winning record. It says a lot about the program Beamer has built that we can now consider a season without an ACC title and ten wins a failure. Better to be in a position to be knocked down than always to be looking up (UVa, Duke, etc).
I feel sorry for Ryan Williams. The look of utter devastation on his face after he fumbled and the fact that he feels responsible for the loss... Truth is, the number 14 team in the nation shouldn't have been in that position to an unranked team in the first place. It was a team loss and I hope Williams bounces back next week. I suspect he will.
Go Hokies!
Well said....sort of
I can at least respect the fact that you are not blaming this loss on chop blocks…but trust me when I tell you that no one who went to UVA or Duke looks up to VT for anything. BTW, VT isn't the 14th ranked team in the country anymore...they will soon be where they have belonged all year, absent the top 25.
Long time no see...
Love it how the VT Bashers show up when the King has fallen off his horse. Where were you guys when we were winning back-to-back ACC titles? Kick us while we're down...we're going to get right back up. None of us enjoys this bitter taste in our mouth. Maybe the rest of you (UVA, JMU, Duke) fans are used to it, but it will NEVER be acceptable at Virginia Tech.
Oddly enough, I think it takes a season like this and a loss like this for a team to really get its act together. The Hokies will learn a lot from this season. This season is not over. Strong finish to come and an even stronger team to come next season.
Always a Hokie
