Football: First Colonial's Dew commits to Hokies

Posted to: College Football High Schools Sports

First Colonial standout Nick Dew has committed to play football at Virginia Tech.

Dew, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound safety, made his decision just before the Virginia Tech-Miami game on Saturday.

“I was going to wait until the All-American game, but the whole recruiting process was getting stressful,” said Dew referring to the Under Armour All-American game on Jan. 2 in Orlando. “It was too hard for me to wait.”

Dew can play a variety of positions, but he said the Hokies want him to begin his career at outside linebacker and strong safety and then move to free safety.

“I feel real comfortable about things,” said Dew, who had 16 offers, including interest from Purdue, Syracuse, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Louisville.

Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster “is going to be coaching me. He’s a genius and I trust him a lot. Just going up there and playing for him is an honor.”

Going to Virginia Tech also allows Dew to follow in the footsteps of former First Colonial star Aaron Rouse, who starred at Virginia Tech before going to the NFL.

“I look up to him and speak to him,” Dew said about Rouse, who began his career with Green Bay but now plays with the New York Giants. “He wishes me the best. It was a comfortable decision.”

Now that his decision is behind him, he wants to focus on school and helping his team.

“I have such a relief off of me now,” he said. “Now I can focus more on my team instead of what I have to do or I need to do. A lot of stress is off my shoulders.”

One to Remember

I had the chance to teach Nick a couple of years ago, and he is just one of those kids a teacher never forgets. He never shies away from conversation, makes you laugh even when you want to scold, and is willing to honestly evaluate himself. He is a young man who wants to succeed and is willing to do the work to get there. Congratulations to Nick and his family on a job well done!!

I may even have to become a Tech fan:)

Congratulations Nick!

I wish you'd gone to Virginia, but am so happy that a fine young man is getting to live out his dreams!! Study hard, and Go Patriots!!

Wow

Purdue, Syracuse, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Louisville..... Those are some big time programs for an all-american.
