PASQUOTANK COUNTY,  N.C.

A Gates County, N.C., man died Tuesday after the car he was driving veered off U.S. 158 in Pasquotank County and crashed into a canal.

Joseph Edward Lilley Jr., 76, went off the road about 7:30 a.m. near the Gates County line, said Trooper Derrick Banks of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Lilley was headed west on U.S. 158.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, Banks said. There were no skid marks on the highway.

Lilley was the second person to die in an auto accident in the region in a week.

On Oct. 7, Amanda Stevenson, 17, of Moyock, N.C., was seriously injured when the car she was driving ran off the right side of Bunker Hill Road in Camden County, said Sgt. E. J. Forbes with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Stevenson over-corrected to the center, then overcorrected again before running off the right side again and striking a tree.

She was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she died the next day.

roadways not prejudiced

Look at the ages involved here...76 and 17. These back roads leave no room for error. My thoughts go out to their families.
