A company that makes submachine guns for use by the military and police plans to hire 35 workers and spend $4 million to relocate its headquarters to Oceana West Corporate Park, the city announced Tuesday.
Transformational Defense Industries Inc., which already operates a 4,000-square-foot local production facility, will move its headquarters from Washington, D.C., and lease an additional 5,000 square feet, according to a news release.
The company, a subsidiary of Switzerland-based Gamma Research and Technologies Holding SA, currently employs 24 workers locally and five in Washington.
The firm manufactures several guns designed to substantially reduce recoil and muzzle climb when fired. Among its models is a .45-caliber submachine gun called the KRISS Super V. The guns range in price from $1,700 to $2,200.
TDI will relocate four workers to Virginia Beach and begin hiring the 35 additional workers in the coming months, said Andrew Finn, its senior vice president and chief financial officer. Those new jobs - which will include midlevel management, engineers and technicians - will have an average salary of $72,778, according to a city news release.
Finn said the move was necessary to continue to expand the company's production, research and development of firearms and accessories.
The Virginia Beach Development Authority gave initial approval on Tuesday for a $45,000 incentive grant for building upgrades and employee training.
"Virginia Beach is focused on growing its defense and high performance manufacturing industries," Warren Harris, the city's economic development director, said in the news release. "This company fits that bill."

Gun Manufacturer
We sure seem "earthy" in this part of Virginia with a tobacco manufacturing plant owned by the Japanese opening in Danville and now a gun manufacturer in the Beach. Where are the high-tech jobs?
high tech jobs?
In a blue collar town?
Right here
Hiring engineers and technicians...these are high tech jobs.
In...
... NoVa and MD
To add...
Raliegh also.
Gun Manufacture to the Beach
Fishead—are you really that clueless? Race has absolutely nothing to do with the issue. There are two reasons for the 2nd amendment. 1st If a robber or rapist sticks a gun in your face, no matter what color he or she is you have one of two choices, Become a willing victim or a legally armed self defending citizen. I choose the later. 2nd and maybe most imporntly is so if and when the Government and our so-called leaders in this great nation become so overbearing and socialist, the direction Mr. OBAMA is going, and try to take away our rights and freedoms “WE THE PEOPLE” have the means to stop them!! Our Forefathers did not win our freedom by passing legislation and social programs, they fought and died for it and this may be a news flash but they had and used guns to do it!
Welcome, TDI
I’ve read a couple articles on the KRISS, photos…. My thoughts are it’s a well done piece but darned if it ain’t ugly. Then again so are Glocks and I won’t carry anything else.
I hope the company finds ‘duh beach’ good for business. Maybe expand in the future and employ more people. I’d be more than happy to test fire the things for less than $70,000.00 a year.

The gun that is to be built here is designed to fire a large caliber round that is more lethal than the standard 9mm round that the Heckler&Koch MP5 fires. The MP5 is a excellent weapon for indoor close combat situations when clearing and securing a building from an unfriendly enemy. Special forces all over the world have used the H&K MP5 and other fine weapons that fire the 9mm cartridge with great success. There are some in that line of work that prefer the old Thompson's. Problem with the Thompson 45 machine gun is a phenomenon call muzzle climb. When you fire it, it is harder to keep it on target because it has a bit of kick to it. TDI solved the problem by redesigning the 45 cal machine gun. It has something to do with how the gas (exhaust from the cartridge) is discharged while firing the weapon. The new design allows greater accuracy by eliminating muzzle climb. Muzzle climb is when the barrel of the gun rises when fired. Without that, the operator can keep the weapon precisely on target. A 9mm will kill but bad guys can still fire back a few rounds before hitting the floor. The .45 round has serious knock down power and does much more damage to the bad guy's body. The ba
Didn't Know They Were Manufactured
I saw a KRISS Super V carbine at the gun store/range on Lishelle by Lynnhaven Mall. It's such a strange looking gun I'd thought it was somebody's homemade conversion of some regular pistol. I didn't realize it was designed and built that way by a real company. I don't like going to that range at all, since there's at least three better ones in the Southside, but I might just have to go there to try that out.
And congrats to Virginia Beach on this good fortune. 35 jobs averaging >$70k a year? Well, that's more than I make... I wonder if they're going to be transferring people from their current location, or hiring here...
