To Bishop E. W. Jackson Sr., homosexuality is sin, and he needs to preach about it. That's why he fears new legislation that puts sexual orientation under hate crimes protection.
"We could find ourselves in a situation where we're accused of inciting someone," Jackson said of pastors who oppose homosexuality. "I am categorically opposed to the hate crimes bill."
Under the bill, crimes based on a victim's sexual orientation or sexual identity could be prosecuted as hate crimes. The measure was approved by Congress and is likely to be signed into law by President Barack Obama today.
The legislation has language meant to preclude prosecution of anyone, including religious leaders, on the basis of speech or beliefs, but socially conservative clergy and religious groups say the bill threatens freedom of religious expression.
Jackson, who leads Exodus Faith Ministries in Chesapeake, is against anti-gay violence, but he is worried that preaching against homosexuality could make a pastor liable for violence by anyone who heard his interpretation of Scripture.
That prospect could lead clergy to avoid the topic, he said. "I do believe it will have a chilling effect on free speech."
Gordon Robertson expressed a similar view, calling the bill "dangerous" on Friday while hosting "The 700 Club" on the Christian Broadcasting Network. CBN is based in Virginia Beach.
The Rev. Steve Jolly of Freemason Street Baptist Church in Norfolk is among clergy who applauded extending hate-crimes protection to gays. "Violence born of hatred is doubly repugnant," he said.
Jolly disputed that freedom of speech would be threatened or that pastors expressing their religious view of homosexuality would be culpable for violence by others.
"If I stand up in the pulpit and say the consumption of alcohol is evil and we should pour it all in the river, that's a personal opinion," he said, offering an analogy. "That's very different from saying, 'There's a bar down the road; let's break in and pour all the alcohol into the river.' "
The bill's success in Congress was cheered by local gay-rights supporters, including Don King, who lives with his partner in Norfolk.
"I did a little dance that it had finally come to fruition," said King, who works in real estate. "Maybe there might be some thought before people go out and do these horrific hate crimes."
Even with the expanded federal hate crime measure, Jon Blair of Equality Virginia, a gay-rights advocacy group, said Virginia should add sexual orientation and gender identity to its state hate-crimes law.
The group's roster of assaults based on sexual orientation includes a 2005 attack on an 18-year-old man in Suffolk. The attackers reportedly yelled slurs about his sexual orientation during the beating.
Those accused were charged with assault by mob and malicious wounding but not with a hate crime.

"Here you have the choice to
"Here you have the choice to follow what HIS word says or follow Satan."
Actually, to be more accurate, one would have the choice to follow a Christian "
I can see you aren't too well versed in scripture. The 10 commandments weren't handed down to anyone specific group. The Torah and the Quran follow the same belief that Christians do: homosexuality is a sin. And again if you think homosexuality isn't a sin, remember any sex outside of marriage is not pleasing to God. Thus the word FORNICATION. But like I've said for the umpteenth time,it's a free gift and you are choose to believe or not. Jesus warned some would take the wider path but few would take the narrow one. You choose your path, and I'll follow the one the bible lays out for me. Okey dokey? I have nothing to lose if I'm wrong, but what will you lose if are wrong?
God bless you Gertz
"BTW, it no longer matters what you or anyone else thinks, this bill was signed last Wednesday."
You have part of it right. Doesn't matter what you or I think. God isn't backing down on Judgment day. I sense a "nanny, nanny boo, boo" coming from your post. Isn't God's free gift wonderful? Here you have the choice to follow what HIS word says or follow Satan. Your choice. You choose to accept it or not. He loves you so much he sent his son to die for you and me. Just remember,God loves you just the way you are,but he loves you too much to let you stay that way. God bless you and I'll be praying for you.
To be more accurate...
"Here you have the choice to follow what HIS word says or follow Satan."
Actually, to be more accurate, one would have the choice to follow a Christian set of morals or one's own independent conscience. I would still like to see indisputable proof that your holy book takes precedence over any other holy book, any scientific evidence, and any logical socially-progressive views of society. You know, other than your faith that it is, in fact true. (And I'm sorry, but really *really* believing something is true does not necessarily make it so.) The basic truth is, there is no indisputable evidence that Jesus was anything other than a regular human being, if he existed at all. Now, of course, you have every right in the world to believe that he was the son of God. You can believe the light signal on the corner of Hampton and Princess Anne is the son of God, for all I care. The problem that Noon and others have is when people feel that their own personal faith is somehow superior to any other views of life, with no other argument than "The Bible says that The Bible is the Word of God." I can see how Noon can get annoyed, trying to deal with that 'logic.'
don't flatter yourself
I've met many like you. Also, you CANNOT speak for God. You can quote from your bible, but you cannot speak for god.
BTW, it no longer matters what you or anyone else thinks, this bill was signed last Wednesday.
Calm down,breathe,laugh
Gertz and Noon, both of you need to go back and read your posts. The posts are so full of anger it is almost you are about to burst a blood vessel. The both of you post like two children who can't have their way because our Heavenly Father said "no" "absolutely no" to fornication. So you attack the poster who doesn't agree with you. I tried to inject humor with my Dr of Pop joke and you are so full of anger, you call names hoping to shame me into accepting what our Heavenly Father said "NO" to. I don't think either one of you has ever encountered someone like me who is grounded in their belief that God's word is the final word. I won't lie to you or for you. Fornication is WRONG,has always been WRONG, and will NEVER be blessed by God.
Actually Edie Singer, I've
Actually Edie Singer, I've bet plenty of people just like you. I've encountered the dishonest arguments so many times that I nearly recite the facts that refute them in my sleep. I'm not trying to shame you into anything. I'm simply pointing out your errors. Happy Halloween.
i'd rather be called the doctor pop then
I'd rather be known as the doctor of pop then a bigot preaching hate. I guess you would rather be the bigot of hate. One thing about your Jesus is he loved everyone, doesn't sound like you got that message.
The Christian bible is used
The Christian bible is used by and large as the big book of excuses on this site. Self professed Christians start with the conclusion they like, "God hates homosexuals," oh wait I mean, "God hates the demons inside homosexuals" (big difference there) and then they thumb through their bible until they find some passage that vaguely fits and, viola!, they have the answer(tm). I believe this is know as Christian apologetics. You actually can earn degrees in that, many of them online.

Evolution? That's the best you can do? Say, do they award doctorates in pop science? ROFL that would make someone..

Someone gave you the sources
Did you read them before you ridiculed them? Let us know when you do. Anxious to see how you refute science without resorting to a fictional group of books.
