Instant reactions to Timbaland's new singles

Our good friend (in the head) Timbaland has had two songs recently hit the Web -- they're tracks from his upcoming album "Shock Value 2," out Nov. 23. Since the first, initial reaction is usually the strongest and most astute -- and also because we don't have much time to give this too much thought -- let's explore them, shall we?

Morning After Dark:

Yes! Remember that bass-kick from "Give It To Me" (and, frankly, 100 other Timbaland songs?) Well, that sounds is back and thank goodness for it. Truly, we never tire of a good Tim bass-kick and will likely be bouncing to it in a nursing home. Honestly, we have no idea who this So Shy chick is -- apparently she's a French artist signed to his label -- but she's got that sultry, slutty, cover-of-Maxim magazine coo down. Also, whereas you could understand and memorize the lyrics to "Give It To Me" in about 30 seconds (even when holding a vodka tonic and moving on the dancefloor) the lyrics here are a bit more complex to figure out. No matter. We'll hear this one on the radio and the club for the next seven months, and rightfully so; like so many other Tim tracks, this gets you to shakin' and feeling good instantly. What can you say? The man knows how to move butts. A

Say Something, feat Drake

Sigh. I like Drake well enough, I guess, but his ubiquity is starting to wear me out. He is, as the kids say with a reluctant tone and a slight grimace, "aiight" but I wouldn't have him play my kids bar mitzvah. That being said, the slow, knocking electro beat here is fire and Drake does his little sing-rap thing over it well. B-

Definitely hyped for this record now. If it's anything like the last it'll be full of a good mix of club hits, unexpected ballads and great album tracks, like one of my favorite overlooked gems of 2007: Miscommunication, feat Keri Hilson and Sebastian. Love this track.

Anyway, "Shock Value 2," woo hoo! Shout out to Tim and Monique!
