Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - 'One Day in Brooklyn'

Jacob Fred Jazz OdysseyThe latest album (Kinnara Records) from Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is so adventurous, surprises pop up along every sonic corner. The Tulsa, Okla.-based quartet, led by pianist Brian Haas, has been around for 15 years in various incarnations, but it’s new to many people and worth discovering.

The quartet (also called JFJO) calls its music “red dirt jazz,” blended in the same fertile soil that nurtured such disparate Tulsa artists as Bob Wills, J.J. Cale and The Flaming Lips. It takes avant-garde improvisational jazz and combines it with the genres more associated with those other Tulsa musicians to create fresh, new instrumental music.

Led by Haas’ piano fills and the lyrical voice of Chris Combs’ pedal steel guitar, JFJO covers material by Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Abdullah Ibrahim, the Beatles and Thelonious Monk. Also included are two originals, including one that combines Beethoven with Dr. Dre.

If you’re looking for music with joy, substance, humor and unbounded creativity, let Jacob Fred take you on a music odyssey.
