Speed, alcohol blamed in fatal Beach crash

VIRGINIA BEACH

Police have determined that speed and alcohol were contributing factors in a fatal crash early Saturday.

About 1:40 a.m., an officer was operating a stationary radar on Ferrell Parkway when Reginald Maurice Butler, 34, of Virginia Beach drove past at more than 100 mph, police said in a news release Monday. The officer attempted to stop him, but he turned onto Lynnhaven Parkway and did not pull over.

Butler continued west on Lynnhaven at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the 2005 Ford Focus and went off the roadway to the right, police said. He then over-corrected, drove off the road to the left and the vehicle rolled into a resident's yard in the 1700 block of Chilhowie Circle.

Butler was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
