Poll: McDonnell increases lead over Deeds in governor's race

Bob McDonnell, Virginia’s Republican nominee for governor, has increased his lead over Democrat Creigh Deeds to 9 percentage points, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll out Wednesday.

McDonnell leads Deeds 51-42 percent, according to the Tuesday poll of 500 likely voters. The new survey shows a significant jump for McDonnell, who led Deeds by only 2 percentage points in the same poll two weeks ago.

Rasmussen is the first major poll in recent weeks to show McDonnell expanding his lead over Deeds.

A Washington Post poll last week showed McDonnell leading by only 4 percentage points, as did a InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion Research poll last Wednesday. McDonnell led by as much as 15 percentage points earlier this year in the Post poll.

McDonnell led by double-digits in most polls through the summer, but Deeds gained ground during September in part because of the hit the Republican took after his 1989 master’s thesis was revealed to advocate a number of controversial social conservative positions.

Fifty-one percent of those polled by Rasmussen Tuesday said the thesis is at least somewhat important to them in their candidate preference. That number, however, has hardly changed in the last two weeks.

In addition, pluralities of those polled said they trust McDonnell more than Deeds on the election’s two major policy issues: transportation and taxes.

McDonnell tops Deeds 45-32 percent on the question of whom voters trust to deal with transportation issues. On taxes, McDonnell is more trusted by a 51-36 percent margin.

More Virginians also hold a favorable view of McDonnell than Deeds—by a 7 percentage point margin, 53-46 percent.

“Transportation and taxes are both potent issues in a Virginia governor’s race,” Scott Rasmussen, CEO of Rasmussen Reports, told POLITICO. “Deeds’ recent comments suggesting he would consider higher taxes to pay for transportation topics appears to have hurt his cause. In every previous poll we’ve conducted on this race, voters were closely divided as to which candidate they trusted more on transportation issues. Now, voters express a clear preference for McDonnell.”

The Deeds campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

While the Rasmussen poll contained few positive indicators for Deeds, a different poll out Wednesday suggested the flap over former Democratic Gov. Doug Wilder’s refusal to endorse Deeds makes little difference to Virginia voters.

According to a Public Policy Polling survey, only eight percent of the 576 likely voters surveyed said Wilder’s endorsement would make them more likely to support a candidate. Twenty-three percent said Wilder’s endorsement would make them less likely to back either Deeds or McDonnell, and 69 percent said it made no difference.

Polls .....

If evidenced by my own phone the polling calls usually come during the day and so the supposed lead by Good Ole Boy McDonnell is caused by the answerer of the phone. Which, during the day, would be those women to do not mind being subjugated and told what to do. Working women and those women who get out and empower themselves are not home during the day, and will not be among those polled. If you could poll the women in the work place and the men who support their empowerment, I think, the numbers would be very different. In these tight times everybody is working; unless of course one is in the upper echelons (McDonnell, et al). There are a lot of people from Virginia Beach and from Richmond and elsewhere, but if they have chosen politics their loyalties are power, money, or both. My personal opinion is that anyone who doesn't rate women at an equal status to men in un-evolved and just as much a terrorist as any we have on the list and even some who are not.

Oh yeah how true. Because a

Oh yeah how true. Because a college educated woman who owns a business would never CHOOSE to stay home with her child. My husband must be FORCING me to do that. I'm extremely happy that as a family we have the means to make that choice and I wish more families could do the same.

Grow up.

Let me guess...you're aspecial guest writer for Daily Kos and Huffington Post. I can tell that you are just by seeing how disconnected with reality you are. I know a lot of professional women who hold leadership and executive positions and support McDonnell. So that just blows your theory right out of the water.

Your kindergarden playground antics are dull and have absolutely no basis.

Wow

BAOBABS, saw your comment on Pilotonline's front page about how we need a governor from Hampton Roads--but I see your other comments addressing the other issues, so I will not only comment that that can't be the only criteria for electing someone governor. And if you want to talk intelligence, we just endured EIGHT LONG YEARS under what has to be the MOST IDIOTIC STUPID MORONIC president ever elected (I realize that was all repetitive, but can't stress it enough). I was deeply ashamed of this country for voting him in not once but twice. Since I am a single issue voter (pro-choice), I will vote for Deeds, although I would agree with you that he is not an ideal candidate. It always amazes me that the ppl who claim they want less government intrusion in their lives will consistently vote for someone who wants to take away a most basic right: that of making reproductive decisions based on our unique situations.

Correction.

Correction: Obama has been in office for eight MONTHS, not eight years. And I hope to God that he only serves one term...not two.

What benifit is it to be so closed minded that you would only be a single issue voter? At least have the courage to think about the many other issues that confront Americans everyday. Abortion is not going to provide a job for a construction worker. Abortion is not going to change our energy policy to be less dependent on fossil fuel. Abortion is not going to save the home of those who are about to loose theirs. Abortion is not going to turn this recession around. In fact, abortion will only make it worse...your killing future tax payers.

corrected back

Eight years is correct for our idiot Bush.

"this recession" as you call it,,,,, thanks to our idiot Bush.

did you suffer in those 8 years?

I didn't. MANY didn't. Many prospered. We're suffering now -- financially [personally]. You wait....I want to hear you praise obammer when you've got no money left from all the taxation/debt he's piling on us.

I LOVE GEORGE W. BUSH!!!!!!

So you didn't lose a penny last fall?

Your stocks all gained, your home value didn't tumble-etc. Wow, what a world you must live in-utopia in Va.

Now, the rest of us in the real world....

Sneak preview of 2010

A sneak preview of 2010 coming in November 2009 here in Virginia. I have seen our start at socialism. I dont like it. Time to flush out the corruption and what a better way to start than in the governors race right here in Virginia.
