Rescuers save 3 boaters swept overboard

Posted to: News

Three men tossed from a 16-foot boat near the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel were pulled from the water about 2 p.m. Monday.

John Bull, a spokesman for the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, said the boat was swamped when a wave washed over the stern.

Emergency responders from Newport News rescued two of the men just south of the bridge-tunnel. The Marine Resources Commission pulled the third to safety.

The Coast Guard sent a helicopter from Elizabeth City to aid in the rescue, but it was not needed, a spokesman said.

Bull did not have the names of the three men but said one is from Suffolk and two are visiting from North Carolina. None was injured.

16 ft boat

i have 2 "16" foot boats, both searay srv180's and i fish the mmbt all the time.the boat these guys were in was 14foot,if that, they carried in the back of a van!!plus it was an open jon boat!! landlubbers need to stay on the land!!

nedrag neighbor

maybe nednag should go out in one of his 16' searays in a noreaster and anchor the boat and see what happens to a LANDLUBBER. By the way NED aren't YOU the one neighbor that was waiting for fish every time he came back? You were certainly standing in his front yard with an empty Food Lion bag asking for some of the fish that they caught.

anchored

i agree with mitchb,it's a common landlubber mistake, maybe the new required safty course for lubbers is a good idea!!

no more freebies ned

maybe respass beach nasty (neighbors)hood watch is a good idea..ned...put the food lion bags up he has no more giveouts, you have to catch your own fish from now on..no more "neighborly" handouts NEDNAG.

Anchored

They most likely did a near fatal mistake by anchoring the boat at the stern. A wave wouldn't have swamped the boat otherwise.

we never anchored the boat

we never anchored the boat at all. It was a wave that came over the stern. Been out in the same boat same place at least 100 times.

3 men rescued

tell em brother, they werent there in the boat with you...GLAD YOU 3 ARE ALIVE...love yah

You can buy a canoe that's 18ft.

Why would you take anything that size out that isn't seaworthy I will never understand.

Glad everyone is okay but dummy move to the boaters that were rescued. Maybe this will knock a little sense into your small brains.

Charge them for the cost of the rescue - it's the price of stupidity.

cost of rescue

they have already paid for the rescue, its called TAXES

Same Mistake Took Lives Last Winter.

When are these people gonna learn. Small boats, maximum load, and small craft warnings don't mix. Last winter out of state fishermen lost thier lives when the engine of thier small boat stalled. Boat was swamped and they were in freezing water. Same situation.

Rockfish Fever

Small Craft Advisory, winds North 15-20, waves 2-4 feet, water temp down to 50 F, and three guys out in a 16' boat. I would not take a 16' boat out to the MMMT, period, let alone in today's conditions.
