Virginia Occupational Safety and Health officials are investigating why a veteran employee fell to his death Tuesday morning at a Hampton Roads Sanitation District plant, a district spokeswoman said today.

Randy Piche, 57, a lead operator, had worked at the Army Base Treatment Plant for 37 years, said Nancy Munnikhuysen, the spokeswoman.

Piche fell through a cutout on the third floor to the second floor about 8 a.m., and was pronounced dead at the scene, said Battalion Chief Harry Worley, a Norfolk Fire-Rescue spokesman.

The 32-employee plant, located inside Norfolk International Terminals, treats sewage for the nearby Norfolk Naval Station.
