One of my first steps is to better take care of the deputies working in and around the jail. I will be more hands on, and more assessable to them. I will make them want to come to work, and enjoy working for the department. Second will be to be more involved in the community by letting them see me as well as other high ranking officers. This in turn will aid in helping keeping our kids off the streets and out of the jail. I worked with the Norfolk Sheriff’s Department for about 3½ in which time I made the rank of Master Deputy. Seeing the way things ways ran even back then made me realize that a change was needed.

Oppose state and city budget cuts that compromise public safety, jail and court security. Raise the salaries of deputy sheriffs (We are near the bottom in Hampton Roads). For cost containment purposes, maximize alternatives to incarceration for non-violent offenders who may be better suited for GPS and Home Electronic Monitoring or work release. Establish an off site work release facility for non-violent offenders who report to work each day. This frees up jail space for those not authorized to work outside and delays the need for a jail addition in the foreseeable future.
