WILLIAMSBURG
Students at the College of William and Mary have elected a transgender homecoming queen.
Jessee Vasold took the field Saturday at halftime of the Williamsburg school's football game against James Madison. The junior and other members of the homecoming court were introduced to the crowd and posed for pictures.
Vasold identifies as "genderqueer," a term for those who don't adhere to either strictly male or strictly female gender roles.
Students nominated and elected Vasold, who will represent the Class of 2011. An e-mail message left for Vasold on Saturday wasn't immediately returned.
"William and Mary is a diverse and inclusive community, and student selections to this year's Homecoming Court reflect that," school spokesman Brian Whitson said in an e-mail.

Are you basing you opinion on one (1) post by a self-proclaimed student of WM? I would have expected more from a Marine. Why don't you do some research on Jessee yourself? There is plenty of information available on the internet. Jessee is a leader in fighting for equal rights for the gay and lesbian community. I certainly applaud anyone seeking equality for all. Just because you have to wear a tight hat doesn't mean you can't slip it off periodically and seek more information to stuff into that brain of yours. By the way, my spouse is a retired Naval Officer so I've been around the miltary mentality most of my life and I am proud to say I see more enlightenment and less judgmentalism all the time.
W&M is NOT Open Minded
To all those who are loudly proclaiming that W & M is soooo open-minded, Don't kid yourself. All you need to do is read the post from the W & M student who's indicated that ONLY men were allowed to vote for the "King" and ONLY women for the "Queen". How enlightened! So, what we have here is a small group of girls who've decided to vote their buddy Jessie in as Homecoming Queen. This gives no indication of any understanding of or compassion towards the transgendered lifestyle and certainly says nothing about the broader intellect of the University (unless that they're too foolish to realize that they've become the punchline in a rather colossal joke).
Male Homecoming Queen
regarding a male Homecoming queen,
he was chosen by his class, it was their decision, ..it's perverse, but who cares ?
Openmindedness to What?
I'm glad the W&M student body is so openminded and diverse. It beats having moral boundaries anytime.

You mean "appalled" not "uphauled" at the Junior's choice of their Homecoming Queen. Another thing, I have googled Jessee and also the Facebook Page this person has and totally feel Jessee looks female. So what does it mean? I suppose it means this person has a gender identity issue. In my opinion, I can think of no greater hardship to bear, so why not give Jessee a break? Gee, it takes so little effort to offer acceptance, respect and understanding to those different than we are. All it takes is some reflective thinking, caring and a kind heart.
Laughable.
Yet you don't offer the same to people that think differently than you do.
After being away for a while, it's nice to come back and see no one has changed.
College Kids: Who Really Cares?
This is a college kid vote so congratulations to whomever the winner is.
As an adult, I have to ask why would anyone care who won?
Posters: Grow up and leave the "kids" alone...

Is only that these same "kids" are registered voters in record numbers. Makes me ill to think what they do to elections with other dumb ideas.
