About those personal fouls

Bobby Wilder's bunch has been guilty of more than a few personal fouls this season, enough to concern fans and, to a degree, even the head coach.

There are lousy personal fouls. Like barking too much at opponents (really, doesn't a hard hit say it better?) and dirty play.

Ah, dirty play. We laugh when Paul Newman's character in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid gives the "There'll be none of this" speech while emphasizing his point with, uh, some of this.

Honestly, Wilder's over the barking and the cheap shots too, and swears (well, swearing is a problem now, isn't it) that he's getting it in check.

But ... there's always a but ... some of it is just plain youthful mistakes.

"We're trying to teach them to play fast and I'd rather have them playing fast and making fast mistakes that are correctable mistakes," Wilder said. "The other night Mychael McJunkins hit someone on the sidelines and got 15 yards for a late hit. Was it a late hit? Maybe. He needs to learn where that fine line is.

"Part of the issue is that in a normal program I'd be coaching up the incoming freshmen on what's acceptable and what isn't. With us being a first-year program, I'm having to coach up a whole team."

So, yes sports fans, the Monarchs' coaching staff is aware of it. And doing something about it.

   * ODU's 10 straight games to start the season has a silver lining: The team is off next week and the coaching staff will get a jump on recruiting.

It's an evaluation period, which means the coaches cannot be in contact with recruits. But they can visit high schools and junior colleges and prep schools and talk with coaches and get transcripts of players' grades.

ODU's coaches will fly out on Sunday and spend Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday making the rounds in their respective recruiting areas. When they return, the Monarchs will return to practice on Thursday.

"We'll practice Thursday and Friday in preparation for VMI, which means we'll get a head start on that game," Wilder said. "But everybody's taking a manditory day off on Nov. 14.

And what will Wilder do that day?

   "Daddy stuff."

   * Pep rally: Friday night behind the Constant Center, beginning at 5:45. Enough said.

Monarch March

We also tailgate in the light blue lot. Everytime about 3:45 we go over for the march. They usually get there anytime between 3:50 and 4:05 p.m. Wilder leads them and it is a really cool experience just to high five them and wish them luck. I challenge everyone in the light blue lot to meet me in front of Web Center to cheer the team on this week. This week since the game is early, they will probably be marching around 11:30 and will get near Web Center around 11:50. Let's meet in front of Web Center at 11:45 and cheer them on!!

I agree

We are in the light blue lot up by the walkway, and every week someone notices the march just as it is finishing. Maybe if they had a small contingent of the band playing in front of the line to announce their arrival more people would gravitate over. I know everyone at our tailgate would, we just always get the heads up too late.

The Monarch Walk

It sure would be nice if more than a handful of people (which are mostly parents) would show up during the walk to cheer on the team and show their support. At the Georgetown game there were maybe about 15 people cheering the players on as they walked into the stadium. Hundreds of people in the lots just a few feet away tailgating and they couldn't take the time to come over and give a high five or a cheer. A good showing for the last home game would a great way to end it.

Monarch Walk

I've tailgated in the lot right at the monarch Walk several times, and all but once I've missed the walk. There's no fanfare, no announcement, no set time (that I am aware of). The one time I was able to cheer the team was completely by chance that I happened to be walking past. In the back of the Light Blue lot near BAL, there's no way to know it's happening.

monarch walk

They actually leave the Powhatan complex around 330 each game, it is posted on the schedule for the day, but with this early game Im not sure what time they will be marching across campus. They actually did post a map of the march early on in the season. And you can tell when they are about to come because the band comes over to the stadium and plays for the tailgaters there, then goes across the street and starts playing in anticipation of the team coming through. A great spot to see the team is if you head over to the stadium right in the front entrance on 49th street in front of the two footballs, you can see coach Wilder right up front and say hi to him and then hi five the whole team as they walk by, they love it! I think they were commenting because it was obvious the guys were walking by, we were all cheering and hi fiving them, and all the tailgaters just kept doing what they were doing and didnt come over to join in. If you see the team coming through, just take a minute to acknowledge them, thats all, doesnt take much effort really and it means so much to the team, gets them pumped up for the game!

agree with football family

On Sept 5 I wanted to see the team on their Monarch walk and I had to fight the crowds and heat to get a glimpse of them. What happened to that spirit to motivate our team? I agree with football family, lets all stop what we are doing and stand up proud for those guys who have worked so hard this season and gave us all a reason to tailgate all those saturday afternoons! Please come over and high five the guys, it really does motivate them and let them know we are there supporting them, not just to tailgate.
