Caregiver charged in 3-year-old's death in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE

Police have charged a 38-year-old man with first-degree murder in the death of a 3-year-old girl he was caring for last week.

Alayah Mahone, of the 7900 block of Turner Road in Norfolk, died Sunday, according to a statement released Tuesday by Chesapeake police.

Police and paramedics were called to the 3400 block of Clover Meadows Drive in Chesapeake about 8 p.m. Oct. 28 for a report of a child who was unresponsive. Police said she suffered a head trauma.

Leon Lamar Surgeon was originally charged with aggravated malicious wounding and felony child abuse, but the charges were upgraded Tuesday afternoon.

Surgeon was being held in the city's jail.
