CHESAPEAKE
Longtime Sheriff John R. Newhart swept away the first election challenge in 20 years to retain the post he’s held since 1970.
Newhart, a Republican, defeated independent candidate and former deputy David K. Cahoon, an inmate hearing officer at St. Bride s Correctional Center. Newhart garnered almost three-quarters of the vote, with all precincts reporting.
During the campaign, Cahoon criticized Newhart for not promoting minority deputies and a culture of cronyism in the department.
Newhart touted efficient jail operations, a culture of innovation and cost-saving measures as hallmarks to his department.
Newhart, 69, said the department will have to continue tightening its budget as state funding becomes more scarce.
Newhart raised about four times as much money as his opponent and stacked up endorsement from city leaders across the political spectrum.

Sheriff Newhart Wins !
What a great thing. The citizens of Chesapeake overlooked the fiction and lies put out by the other camp. I have voted for Sheriff Newhart since I turned 18 and he it truly a person who is concerned and committed to our community. I guess Mr. Cahoon, Mr. Brown, Mr Guill and the rest of their cronies can just crawl back under the rock from which they came from. Way To Go Sheriff Newhart ! Keep up the great work!
The lucky ones
Chesapeake residents are lucky to have John Newhart as their Sheriff
and apparently they are satisfied with him and his record as he easily defeated his recent challenger 3 to 1, by popular vote.
Sheriff Newhart is the most senior constitutional officer in the entire United States of America. That fact alone should make every Chesapeake citizen proud.
If you do not agree that is your right. Thank GOD that the other 75% of us are smart enough to recognize what a gift it is to have him and others like him willing to dedicate their lives to serve others, including those who just don't get it !
spelling errors
My apologies to all, before I am berated for an honest mistake.
My over eager commenting this morning led me to misspell "Sheriff" many times.
I'm a human being and I make mistakes.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Congratulations to Sherriff Newhart on not only on the win, but also on running a clean campaign! David Cahoon ran a dirty campaign claiming half-truths about our Sherriff and saying that those who work for the department were "afraid" to vote their minds. Well, it looks like that certainly wasn't the truth. THANK GOD I won't have to see the word, "nepotism" in an article again! By the way Mr. Cahoon (and your ENTIRE "TEAM")... Nepotism, by definition, is showing favortism to one's family in a business setting. Can you please tell me who Sherriff Newhart has working in the department that is related directly to him? I, for one, am glad that I am not going to see the people who have earned their ranks in the department through YEARS of committed service lose their jobs because you were going to bring in a whole team of people who didn't have a CLUE! Oh yeah, and to BlessedOne and all the other Cahoon cronies that post... You were right. The citizens of Chesapeake have spoken, very clearly in fact!
Glad to see
glad to see that 27% of the votes went to someone outside the good'ol boys system
hmm
It is a shame that Chesapeake is full of 200 year old administration that refuse to retire or die
what's the old saying?
Ah, yes..... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." The Chesapeake Sherriff's department has progressed and adapted to change throughout the years of the current administration. Why mess with that? When Sherriff Newhart is done, he will step down.
Replacement
I sure the individual he is grooming to replace him is happy he was re-elected.
