Company cutting 185 jobs at Norfolk call center

Posted to: Business Jobs and Workplace Norfolk

NORFOLK

Advanced Services Inc., a subsidiary of GE, will close its customer call center here next year, laying off 185 workers, a company executive said Monday.

The layoffs will begin in May, and the center will close by the fourth quarter of 2010, said Tonya Miller, vice president of human resources for Advanced Services in Louisville, Ky.

The center handles customer calls about GE appliances. Miller said its closing was triggered by "a huge drop in call volume driven by the economic environment."

Advanced Services, she said, chose to close the Norfolk call center, instead of its other two, in Rapid City, S.D., and Memphis, Tenn., based on a review of "operations, work processes, call structure and organizational structure."

Miller said a limited number of employees in Norfolk would be eligible for openings at the Rapid City or Memphis centers.

All of the Norfolk employees will receive job-placement services, the financial equivalent of unused vacation time and a severance package amounting to one week of pay for every year of service.

Advanced Services opened the local office in 1993. It is on Walmer Avenue in Norfolk Commerce Park.

Cars??

Advanced Services deals with GE major appliances. I don't understand why everyone is talking about car manufacturers. While the management team at ASI really needs to go, I feel for the other people I used to work with there. I'm glad you all are at least getting advance notice so you can start looking now. I've been out of work since April and there are 300 people applying for every opening in Hampton Roads...

That's the internet

Well, that's the Internet. People don't actually read articles but skim for knee jerk keywords and comment on those. In this case the fast skim misread GE for GM.

How long?

How long is it going to be before this company moves all its call center jobs overseas without paying any penalty?

Most of them are overseas

Most of them are overseas already. And the quality of service has gone through the floor. But for those savvy enough, more information is generally available online. Of course if you can't find it online you call in and the automated attendant interactive voice response system reminds you 1000 times to go online and find your answer.

Companies don't really want to talk to their customers, honestly. They just want your money then for you to go away.

Huh?

Why would you have to pay a penalty? This is a free country, right?

State of Hampton Roads Job Market

This is yet another company laying off in the Hampton Roads area. If you aren't in the ship building business around here, there just aren't many jobs. What are our city leaders doing to attract new businesses to the area? It seems like it isn't much. The Feds can't be blamed for everything. The city developers have to take some responsibility for not growing our areas business community.

George W and his man Tricky Dick

I also forgot all these crazy home loans were created owner while George Bush was in office causing tons of Foreclosures to happen.

You need to review the budget process of Congress. The President only “ask” or proposes to Congress his desires. Incidentally, we have almost tripled our deficit since January with the “One Party” system we have now. If congress didn’t create loopholes for companies to move overseas, then foreclosures wouldn’t be an issue. By the way, many of those laws were created during the Clinton years, and the effects taking place in recent times.

You had better check with

You had better check with Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and Maxine Waters.

rosy skies

And if believe this, the rose colored glasses they will give you will make every thing Just fine. This the only change you will ever see

Google

Use it to look up The Community Reinvestment Act the law that allowed those 'crazy' home loans to happen.

George Bush? Freddie Mac and

George Bush? Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae are to blame, as is the FHA. They've existed a long time before Bush. Sure Bush had the home for every American nonsense. And under Clinton Glass-Stegal act was repealed.

You have to look at it harder. The point is that people on the bottom go in-debt to people on the top. More and bigger homes, lifetimes of debt servitude to those on top. Meanwhile all retirement savings are in 401ks which benefit wall streeters and fund managers and the like. The president is just a figure head. Big corps, wall street and the military industrial complex run things. The sooner people realize this the better. Every president that I know of while I've been alive has made choices that benefit the people at the top long term. Money is power.

Maybe?

I think it is the unions and the social special interests groups.

How long are people going to blame Bush?

We got 7 more years to blame Bush. Deregulation and shipping jobs over seas started with the Republicans do your homework. You must miss the show were they exposed the Republican party for doing so. Plus just use google. Obama only been in office for less than a year and you blame him for the economy? This is a joke...at least the stock market is going better, gas prices are lower and he supports Unions where I don't have to pay for insurance my employer does like they should. Wake up or stop at Starbucks more often!

YAY UNIONS! $100 dollars

YAY UNIONS! $100 dollars and hour for some bum to screw in the same screw every day. and then, when the car company goes out of business because they are paying people with limited skills astronomical salaries, we get to pay their salaries! thats awesome! why dont you wake up stop watching msnbc prime time (the fox news of the liberal party). see you next tuesday!

If I recall, under unions,

If I recall, under unions, on a vehicle that sold for $60,000 retail the workers would see something like $3,300 of that.

There is no great answer. Unchecked, employers will pay employees nothing and pocket all the profits. Unions tend to strangle the employers.

While it's nice to pretend business owners will reward the workers well, they mostly will just reward the people at the top.

Also, just because workers are blue collar doesn't mean they aren't skilled and capable of running things. Many of them are able to solve issues NOW, without delay. The friends I have that are from blue collar backgrounds are generally better than the white collars in skills, but it might just be my friends. Not sure.

Yeah its just your friends

Yeah its just your friends (CRYING)

PSSSSSSSSSSSST

You think George Bush was bad. Wait til you see where we are when Obama is done. I am simply amazed at the people who forgot about 9/11 and what it really did to our economy. Oh and do your homework honey. Deregulation started with Clinton. : )

Do you really think McCain

Do you really think McCain would have been any different? Do you remember Bush pushing through huge bailout plans? Did you see action to prosecute the crooks on Wall Street, at Fannie Mae, buying houses on lies, Realtors, Mortgage folks, etc under Bush?

At election time the sheep of the USA are given two candidates to choose from. Do you not think you are presented with these choices for a reason? Do you think they are going to allow some outsider candidate to win that seat? Find some outsider candidate that is good, and you will see someone shunned from any media attention, blocked from debate, etc.

And I'm not talking about Ron Paul, before you go there.

how many republicans voted

how many republicans voted for it in the house and/or senate.
