Company cutting 185 jobs at Norfolk call center

NORFOLK

Advanced Services Inc., a subsidiary of GE, will close its customer call center here next year, laying off 185 workers, a company executive said Monday.

The layoffs will begin in May, and the center will close by the fourth quarter of 2010, said Tonya Miller, vice president of human resources for Advanced Services in Louisville, Ky.

The center handles customer calls about GE appliances. Miller said its closing was triggered by "a huge drop in call volume driven by the economic environment."

Advanced Services, she said, chose to close the Norfolk call center, instead of its other two, in Rapid City, S.D., and Memphis, Tenn., based on a review of "operations, work processes, call structure and organizational structure."

Miller said a limited number of employees in Norfolk would be eligible for openings at the Rapid City or Memphis centers.

All of the Norfolk employees will receive job-placement services, the financial equivalent of unused vacation time and a severance package amounting to one week of pay for every year of service.

Advanced Services opened the local office in 1993. It is on Walmer Avenue in Norfolk Commerce Park.

Cars??

Advanced Services deals with GE major appliances. I don't understand why everyone is talking about car manufacturers. While the management team at ASI really needs to go, I feel for the other people I used to work with there. I'm glad you all are at least getting advance notice so you can start looking now. I've been out of work since April and there are 300 people applying for every opening in Hampton Roads...

That's the internet

Well, that's the Internet. People don't actually read articles but skim for knee jerk keywords and comment on those. In this case the fast skim misread GE for GM.

How long?

How long is it going to be before this company moves all its call center jobs overseas without paying any penalty?

Most of them are overseas

Most of them are overseas already. And the quality of service has gone through the floor. But for those savvy enough, more information is generally available online. Of course if you can't find it online you call in and the automated attendant interactive voice response system reminds you 1000 times to go online and find your answer.

Companies don't really want to talk to their customers, honestly. They just want your money then for you to go away.

Huh?

Why would you have to pay a penalty? This is a free country, right?

State of Hampton Roads Job Market

This is yet another company laying off in the Hampton Roads area. If you aren't in the ship building business around here, there just aren't many jobs. What are our city leaders doing to attract new businesses to the area? It seems like it isn't much. The Feds can't be blamed for everything. The city developers have to take some responsibility for not growing our areas business community.

George W and his man Tricky Dick

I also forgot all these crazy home loans were created owner while George Bush was in office causing tons of Foreclosures to happen.

You need to review the budget process of Congress. The President only “ask” or proposes to Congress his desires. Incidentally, we have almost tripled our deficit since January with the “One Party” system we have now. If congress didn’t create loopholes for companies to move overseas, then foreclosures wouldn’t be an issue. By the way, many of those laws were created during the Clinton years, and the effects taking place in recent times.

You had better check with

You had better check with Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and Maxine Waters.
