Eilen Jewell - 'Sea of Tears'

Eilen JewellThis jewel of a singer-songwriter should not be confused with that other Jewel, she of the sappy folk-pop fame. Eilen Jewell is a Boston-based roots rocker who, if there’s any artistic justice in this world, deserves the recognition and success currently afforded the other, similarly named artist.

On her third release, the Boise, Idaho, native presents a satisfying collection of mainly originals that showcase the width and breadth of Americana. With her understated yet sultry voice, Jewell and her skilled backing trio offer spirited honky-tonk, brooding country, rollicking rockabilly, chiming folk-rock, and soulful blues played with reverence and conviction.  Covers include tunes by Lynn, Them and, in an album highlight, her tense and moody take on Johnny Kidd & The Pirates’ “Shakin’ All Over.”

“Sea of Tears” is bound to cause tears of joy for lovers of rustic roots rocking.
