A Ferrum College student was killed and another was injured in a shooting near campus about 4 p.m. today in which a hunter apparently mistook the students for deer, authorities said.

The identities of the victims were not released pending notification of their families. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries was interviewing the hunter early this evening, said Sgt. Karl Martin.

The shooting occurred in an industrial park that is Franklin County property about a mile west of the college, said Natalie Faunce, a school spokeswoman.

The college sent an alert to students and staff shortly after 5 p.m. saying there was no danger to the campus community.
