Firefighters investigating alarms, bathroom fire at NSU dorm

Firefighters extinguished a blaze in a bathroom inside a Norfolk State University dormitory this morning after being called several times overnight on reports of fire alarms sounding.

No one was injured in the blaze shortly before 4 a.m. inside the bathroom in Scott Hall, said Battalion Chief Harry Worley, Norfolk Fire-Rescue spokesman. When firefighters arrived at the dorm, they found a light haze on the third floor and found that someone had set fire to some food cartons inside the bathroom stall. The bathroom had some smoke damage along with some scorched tiles, but there was no other damage to the dorm.

“It is an arson,” Worley said.

Firefighters already had been to the dorm twice on reports that fire alarms were sounding, but they did not appear to have been activated by smoke, Worley said. Someone apparently sprayed an aerosol into the devices, he added.

The dorm was evacuated, Worley said.
