In a game that featured 952 yards of total offense , the Marlins held on to earn the No. 2 seed in next week’s Division 6 playoffs.

Beach District champion Bayside (9-1) hosts Landstown in next Friday’s Eastern Region quarterfinals.

The second-ranked Marlins looked to be a heavy favorite against Kellam (4-6). But the Knights dished out plenty of “nothing-to-lose” attitude. Kellam ran several trick plays, onside kickoffs and fake punts to match Bayside throughout.

Kellam finished with nearly half of the total yards with 427.

“This was a big wake-up call for us,” said Bayside receiver Demetrious Nicholson, who caught touchdown passes of 84, 37 and 77 yards. He finished with five receptions for 198 yards and picked off two Kellam passes.

“They gave us a whole lot more than we expected.

“I’m just glad we pulled this off.”

Knights QB Matt Schmit threw for 255 yards and two TDs, while K.J. Florence had five catches for 124 yards.

Anthony Andrades led the Knights’ running attack, gaining 96 yards on 13 carries.

“I still think we have a good defense,” Nicholson said. “But they came out strong and showed us a lot of things we didn’t expect. We have to handle things like that better in the playoffs.”
