Hokies, Cincy to meet at FedEx Field in 2012

Posted to: College Football Sports

Virginia Tech’s recent stretch of strong scheduling continued today, when the Hokies announced they’ll play Cincinnati at the Washington Redskins’ home stadium, FedEx Field, in 2012.

The Hokies opened the 2004 season against Southern California at FedEx and are scheduled to play Boise State there on Oct. 2 next season. The exact date and time for the game against the Bearcats has not been released.

“Being able to play in FedEx, you like that,” Tech coach Frank Beamer said. “We’ve got a lot of fans in that area that can get out and support the Hokies. I think it’s a good thing for us.”

The 2012 game is a make-up of what was supposed to have been this season’s opener at Cincinnati. The Hokies pushed that game back to accommodate a made-for-television meeting with Alabama in the Georgia Dome.

Suddenly, though, a game against the Bearcats has a similar appeal. Cincinnati is 10-0 and ranked No. 5. The Crimson Tide are also 10-0 and ranked No. 2. Next year’s FedEx foe, Boise State, is likewise 10-0 and ranked No. 6.

The Bearcats have won 16 of their last 17 games, with their lone loss in that span coming at the hands of the Hokies – in last season’s FedEx Orange Bowl.

Tech also beat Cincinnati at home, 29-13, in 2006. The Hokies have won 5 of 9 meetings with the Bearcats, who will technically be the home team in the 2012 game.
