Joe Louis Walker - 'Between a Rock and the Blues'

Joe Louis WalkerAlthough he’s a 40-year veteran, Joe Louis Walker flies under the blues radar. Hopefully, this session helmed by ace guitarist, producer, former Bob Dylan sideman and Roomful of Blues founder Duke Robillard will give Walker the recognition he so justly deserves.

Robillard keeps the proceedings rustic and real by surrounding Walker with the swinging, seasoned Stony Plain label house band and guest guitarist Kevin Eubanks. With a killer Otis Redding-style voice and a taut, stinging guitar style, Walker creates a set of blues-inspired old-school soul, nascent rock ’n’ roll and vintage R&B.

Walker’s material includes originals, blues chestnuts, and tunes by Robillard and Ray Charles. He infuses each song with soul power thanks to a gritty voice full of aching, longing and heartbreak. Add his economical yet dramatic lead guitar lines, and you’ve got relevant soul and blues with feeling.

“Between a Rock and the Blues” showcases powerful music that deserves a wider audience.
