Kaine headed for U. of Richmond after term ends

RICHMOND

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine will resume a teaching career when his term expires in January, taking a part-time, nontenured position at the University of Richmond as an instructor in its law and leadership schools, officials announced Thursday.

A Harvard-educated lawyer, the governor previously taught at the university from 1987-93, leaving when he entered Richmond city politics.

Kaine will teach one class per semester - alternating between the two subjects each term - on Monday mornings and devote much of the remaining work week to his "primary job" as Democratic National Committee chairman.

Earlier this week, Kaine said he will continue serving as a top Democratic partisan despite the crushing losses his party faced in Tuesday's elections.

Kaine said he will work to keep his personal politics out of the classroom and encourage students "to articulate their own views."

"It's hard to imagine anyone better than Gov. Kaine to help train the next generation of lawyers," said university President Edward Ayers.

The news was also welcomed by Carl Tobias, a Richmond law professor who will be one of Kaine's faculty colleagues.

"He taught here before, so it's not new. I think every other lawyer who knew him thought he was a great lawyer when he was in private practice," Tobias said, noting that the governor's public policy expertise will also benefit students.

While Kaine's hiring drew plaudits from school officials, it also raises questions about how elected officials land high-profile second jobs.

Recent reporting in The Virginian-Pilot has brought attention to the cases of several current legislators on the payrolls of public colleges which receive taxpayer funding that is approved by the General Assembly, and the potential conflict of interest that can represent.

The governor said he politely rebuffed inquiries he received from public universities about joining their staff because they are government entities.

"I told them as long as I am appointing your boards and writing your budgets, I really can't talk about that," Kaine said, noting that he was comfortable taking the Richmond job because it is a private school that doesn't rely on state funding.

University officials declined to say how much Kaine will be paid, citing Richmond's status as a private institution.

Some of you are just pathetic

Can't handle the real world? Those who can't teach? Give me a break. It seems to me that you may be jealous of Kaine's success. How many of you ran a successful law practice? Been the mayor of Richmond? Governor? Seems to me like he walked the dog around you in the real world. Kaine is leaving the governor post to do something honorable, but it seems that education is a four letter word to some of you. To steal a line from H. Clinton, if Tim Kaine walked on water, you would criticize him for not being able to swim. Grow up.

so

big deal...next story

Governor Kaine

Why don't he go back to Harvard? We won't miss him.

For all of you people who

For all of you people who hate Tim Kaine you sure don't have much to back up your criticisms!!

- VA unemployment is significantly lower than national average and points lower than our next door neighbor North Carolina
- Kaine didn't run the budget into the ground like the last GOP gov. that got voted out 8 years ago (uh oh better blackout to forget that screw up, the ones conservatives love to ignore)

I mean you don't even know what you're criticizing him about, VA is very business friendly and national rankings reflect that... Oh but I thought not knowing how to manage the economy why Dem's are so terrible

Whether or not he was the

Whether or not he was the best governor of VA, he is a good person and as a U of R Law School hopeful, I am interested in taking courses that he may teach.

While Kaine Was Governor

Forbes.com rated Virginia as the best state for business 3 years in a row. They also rated Virginia as the fifteenth best state to live in.
Another company that I don't know to much about, rated Virginia as the seventh best state to live in. Virginia's job lost is lower than the national average.

isn't that special

you mean he wont be heading to the unemployment line, why timmy you can't handle it in the real world, so what better way to avoid the employment office. head back to the liberal university nest where you will safe and warm with the rest of the fluffy soft little professors. good luck!

eeeek a spider!

University of Richmond is a private, coeducational institution affiliated with the Baptist General Association of Virginia.
Those danged liberal Baptists!

LOL. They don't care George.

LOL. They don't care George. They don't want facts 'n stuff. They just want to throw mud and express some vague advocacy for their "Values(TM)". Your subject line made me laugh.
