NEWPORT NEWS
Newport News firefighters rescued a kayaker who ended up in the James River this morning, the Fire Department said.
Three people left in kayaks from the Huntington Park public landing near the James River Bridge and were out on the river when one of them ended up in the water before 10:40 a.m., Assistant Fire Chief Robert Craft said.
The department's Marine Incident Response Team reached the kayakers near the mouth of the Pagan River on the Isle of Wight County side of the James and evaluated them on a small beach. No one was injured, Craft said.
The Virginia Marine Resources Commission also responded.

At the very least
Sometimes even the most careful boaters can get into trouble due to unexpected weather changes, but really, this was predicted well ahead of time.
At the very least, when people place themselves in need of rescue through deliberate and foolish risk taking, they should be billed for the expenses of their rescue.
Idiots
If you want to play games in this weather fine. But your idiotic actions put the lives of of the public safety officals who have to rescue you at risk.
Think about someone other than yourselves.
Should have been a Darwin award winner.
A waste of time
Anyone who goes out in that weather deserves what they get. They should have let Darwin's theory run it's course. That's a gene pool no one else should be able to dive into.
Are you kidding me?
You are going to go kayaking in this weather? Very nice to put the lives of rescuers are risk all because you wanted to kayak in the storm, you should know better.
I'm so glad they are ok
I'm so glad the kayakers are ok but...
the weather!!
Why???
