REJECTED PLATES
Most of the requests for personalized plate messages that the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles gets are legitimate and fun, DMV spokeswoman Melanie Stokes wrote in an e-mail.

However, the DMV – which reviews hundreds of personalized plate messages every month – has to take precautions to
avoid inappropriate messages being displayed on a license plate, she added.

Here are some examples of rejected personalized plates:

-Variations on AZZ and A55 are denied.
-Excretory-related references are denied.
-Combinations that describe illegal drug use or culture such as EX TA CE, XXXTC, and LOVE XTC are denied.
-References to profane words are denied.
-Text-messaging abbreviations are good examples of how language evolves in popular culture. Some references – such as LOL and OMG – are harmless; others are unacceptable.

VIRGINIA BEACH

Meet Virginia's first couple of vanity.

The license plates on David Osborne's bright yellow Dodge Neon announce to the world that he is MR VAIN.

And the tags on girlfriend Samantha Thomson's black Dodge Stealth inform people she is MRS VAIN.

The Beach couple pay an extra $10 apiece each year to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to declare their love for each other - and for salon-quality hair products.

"There's a couple of people in our apartment complex that just call us by our license plates because they don't know our real names," Thomson said.

The two are right at home here. A 2007 survey found that about 1 in 6 Virginians have personalized plates - making the commonwealth the vainest state in the nation.

As of June 30, more than 1 million active vehicle registrations were for vanity tags.

Osborne, 26, had declared himself vain before Thomson, 21, came along. He said he's always been into clothes and looking good.

"I spend ungodly amounts on sunglasses," he said.

The self-described '80s geek and indie dance freak also likes "Mr. Vain," by Culture Beat. A former guest DJ at Norfolk nightclub The Wave, he started to call himself "Davey Vain" about four years ago.

Osborne uses the identity on MySpace and Facebook and even got a friend who works for a cell-phone company to make sure the last four digits of his phone number spell "vain."

His license plate said 2 VAIN when he met Thomson at The Wave in July 2007.

At first, Thomson wondered why everything was "vain this, vain that."

As a hair stylist and cosmetology instructor, Thomson said she also likes to look good. She said she spends about 40 minutes on her makeup. But Osborne is more vain than she is, she said.

Her boyfriend spends 15 to 20 minutes spiking his hair, when it should only take two, Thomson said.

"I can never style his hair," she added. "He has to do it. I do it wrong every time."

The couple eventually plan to tie the knot, they said. Thomson started calling herself "Mrs. Vain" on MySpace in the fall of 2007.

Then in January 2008, Thomson, who never had a personalized plate before, changed her tags. Osborne followed suit the same day, leaving behind 2 VAIN.

Now, when the couple take separate cars, they like to drive next to each other so people can say: "Hey, there's Mr. and Mrs. Vain!"

Who hit any of your buzzers

Who hit any of your buzzers anyways? I mean Jealous much?

Actually for all of you

Actually for all of you haters, my little brother was very popular in school and he is a terrific dresser, musician, and little brother. He never liked Star Wars, or Star Trek and he's always been into music, which is a good thing cause the boy can sing and play a mean guitar. You go little brother. The licence plates are awesome. All the haters are just jealous cause their licence plates suck.

what a funny family

you folks are a hoot

Not sure if..

Davy Vain of the late 1980's early 1990's hair metal band "Vain" would like knowing you copied his trademark name--except for the spelling..

Just sayin..

vain

couple of goofy kids,... but he is going bald and I wonder what she would look like if she didn't spend so much time on makeup. It's tough to grow up, kids.

On a possitive note.

Thanks to Jen McCaffery for writing a fun article on Sam and myself. We really appreciate it and we truly enjoyed talking with you. Happy Holidays to you.

Davey & Samantha Vain ;-)

No more vanity plates...

I used to think they were great...but then I realized that with a vanity plate if you accidentally cut someone off or tick them off without realizing it, they can quickly remember your vanity plate...best thing is to keep your numbered plate...it's a lot harder for them to remember...

Ridiculous news

This qualifies as ridiculous news. There's vain and then there's vain - and this couple takes to new, more ridiculous heights. SHEEESH!

WOW! This is just sooooo exciting!!!!!!

What's with that, they look average to me except for the goofy hair.

Strange...

"he's always been into clothes and looking good." I don't think he's during a very good job at that. I left the all black phase back in middle school.

What are you the clothes

What are you the clothes police? He's an awesome dresser. So he's wearing black in this picture. That doesn't mean he always wears black.

to be fair

It looks as if he is still living those glory days.

WEBSTERS DEFINES

WEBSTERS DEFINES VAIN.. conceited: characteristic of false pride; having an exaggerated sense of self-importance; "a conceited fool"; "an attitude of self-conceited

DMV Website

DMV has a website where you can look up vanity plates and check to see if the plate is available. I wanted URINBRD (thats you are inbred for you challenged folks) because it seemed to just fit around here.

Running…

…the article was a simple business decision. Just think of how many copies those two will buy.

buy?

likely to empty the box for the price of one-------

Good One

Now that was funny RJ.

Going bald

Mr Vain you're going bald! May not want to be messing with your hair so much it will accelerate the hair loss. HTH

That's a Brain Buzzard on her head.

It seeks out the brain-dead and feeds on their brains.

Notice the habitat.

That's a woodpecker.
