Newport News attorney Douglas E. Miller has been selected to replace retiring U.S. Magistrate Judge James E. Bradberry.

Miller, a 1995 graduate of William & Mary Law School and a partner with the law firm of Patten, Wornom, Hatten & Diamonstein, will begin his new job Feb. 1. Miller will join two other magistrate judges who hear cases in both the Norfolk and Newport News federal courthouses.

The federal district judges based here selected Miller from a pool of candidates.

Magistrate judges perform nearly all the duties of district court judges except felony trials. They also handle the misdemeanor and petty offense dockets, most bond hearings and they typically mediate civil actions. They are paid around $160,000.
