Newport News man charged in 2008 shooting death

A Newport News man was charged Thursday in a shooting death in 2008, police said.

Jarice Lamier Royal, 21, was charged with murder, attempted robbery, possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony in the death of William Morrison, police said.

Morrison, 37, was shot during a robbery attempt on Feb. 17, 2008, in a courtyard in the 2200 block of Jefferson Ave.

Royal was being held in the Hampton Roads Regional Jail on Thursday on unrelated charges when was he was charged.
