North Landing Bridge closing for two months

Posted to: Chesapeake News Transportation and Traffic

CHESAPEAKE

The North Landing Bridge at Mount Pleasant Road will be closed for two months, beginning Nov. 15, according to the city.

The closure, expected to be finished by Jan. 15, 2010, will allow crews to replace the deck and make other repairs, a city news release says. The bridge crosses the Intracoastal Waterway.

Signs will mark the detour route, which includes Centerville Turnpike and Kempsville Road.

Are commercial vehicles

Are commercial vehicles going to be able to cross after the work is completed. Will they be changing weight restrictions?

Hello?

Do the repairs at night? They wouldn't even get the prep work done before they would have to start undoing it to open the road back up. You have no idea what you are talking about. As for VDOT, Sessoms, Spore, and city council. This isn't being handled by them. As much as I dislike the vb gov and city council, this isn't their mess. People need to quit armchair refereeing on things that have no clue about. Let people do their jobs!

Facts

This is a project run by the US Army Corps of Engineers, not VDOT.

Repairs include repairing the bridge house, removal and replacement of the existing bridge surface, steel grid replacement and concrete fill, repairs to the underwater support pilings and concrete abutments, and replacement of traffic control lights and poles and traffic control gates.

This is a lot more than just replacing the bridge deck. Two months isn't that bad for all that work, and there's plenty of ways to detour.

Oh, and Santa, you forgot to blame Pelosi and Reid too. Because road construction under Bush and Gilmore was perfect, right?

It sure was...

(sarcasm post here) Let's see: under Gov. Gilmore, for example, how many lanes were added to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel?

DEMS no better

Let's see my pro-Democratic Party, pro-taxpayer subsized transit loving friend - how many lanes were added to the HRBT under the Mark Warner and Tim Kaine administrations?

Darn Funny

When you realize that political extremist Reid Greenmun voted for both Mark Warner and Tim Kaine.

Let me ask you

how many lanes were added under Gov. Rob (D) or Gov. Allen (R)?

You forget what a sarcasm post is (not going to say what I want, or else I will be censored)

Typical inefficiency of

Typical inefficiency of Sessoms, City Council, James Spore, VDOT, Kaine, and Obama. The Seabees could rebuild this bridge overnight with prefabricated parts. Most road contractors are enemies of the taxpayer dollar. So are the politicians that pay them.

Santa

The Bridge is also technically in Chesapeake not Virginia Beach...the project belongs to the ARMY corps of Engineers...neither city is involved

Seabees

Could do all that WHILE BEING SHOT AT!!!

Kids these days..... mumble mumble mumble stay offa my lawn mumble mumble

If I remember correctly....

They replaced the deck on the Dominion Blvd bridge by closing it over a period of 2 weekends. Brought the new decks in pre-made on barges...took off the old...replaced with the new. Finished faster than they said it would take I believe.

that deck wasn't made from

that deck wasn't made from concrete...after pouring the new concrete deck they have to let it cure for 30 days before they resume traffic

His info was provided in the original press release and did not make the cut - please feel free to contact him or send a Blog to our Norfolk District Corps website about any Corp-related question/concern. complaining

cry me a river

sounds reasonable

How about they just take the deck off, work a little at night, lay it back on top before sunrise, then repeat the process each night. Maybe they could spot weld it together as they replace the deck in tenths. That would make it easier for the commuters who use this vital artery. Wait, you mean there is an alternate route?

Maybe they could just start

Maybe they could just start a ferry service?

Is it me....

Or does this seem like a misappropriation of time and money. This is a big deal for alot of commuters.Someone help me understand why this repair cannot be done at night without having to close a vital artery of roadway for two months.

They are replacing the deck

The deck is the roadway on the bridge. You can't drive where there is no surface. So it is just you.

Still, two months is an

Still, two months is an incredible amount of time out of service. I figured they were replacing most of the bridge with that amount of time.

And why is there only two-days notice?? - they've known for months when this project would begin...commuters have short notice to scramble for new routes. It's not like there's an easy alternative here.

There was a lot more then a

There was a lot more then a two day notice....and how much time does one need to plan to figure out that you'll need to drive around?
