Norfolk State University President Carolyn Meyers has been named one of three finalists for the top post at Morgan State University in Baltimore.
The announcement comes as Meyers, who is in her fourth year at Norfolk State, has come under scrutiny by its Board of Visitors. She was the subject of a lengthy closed-session meeting last month, along with reviews of internal audits.
Calls to Meyers were not returned Wednesday. Attempts to reach board rector and spokesman Ed Hamm also were unsuccessful.
Morgan State's Board of Regents is expected to announce a new leader by Dec. 15 and have the person in place by the first of the year.
Enrollment at Norfolk State increased 10 percent this year from 6,325 last fall, and many supporters hail Meyers' vision to continue to increase enrollment and raise the academic profile of incoming students.
Critics, however, have said Meyers hasn't pushed the university far enough in the areas of technology and research and in forging better partnerships with cities to advance the school.
Meyers, NSU's fourth president, has spent more than 30 years in higher education and work in the science field, including positions at North Carolina A&T State University, Georgia Tech and the National Science Foundation. She holds mechanical engineering degrees from Howard University and a chemical engineering doctorate from Georgia Tech.
Another finalist for the Morgan State post is Calvin Jamison, who is the vice president for business affairs at the University of Texas at Dallas. A former Richmond city manager, he also held faculty and administrative positions at Virginia Commonwealth University.
The other candidate, David Wilson, is chancellor of Wisconsin Colleges and University of Wisconsin Extension and has more than 30 years in higher education.
Morgan State, like NSU, is a historically black college, with about 7,000 students. MSU is one of Maryland's four public research universities.
The finalists will visit Morgan State's campus this month. The new president will replace Earl Richardson, who will step down Dec. 31 after 25 years as president. T he search process began in January and included the review of more than 100 applications, according to Morgan State news releases.
The news was announced at a key fund raising time for Norfolk State, which has been named the "School of the Month" by the Tom Joyner Foundation, an organization formed by the popular radio jock to solicit money for historically black colleges and universities.

Why, Why, Why from the Zookeeper
It is quite evident that ZOOKEEPER is probably just that...a Zookeeper. Talking to animals doesn't require much intelligence, but rather interpreting their responses does. Reading comprehension is also in order. Before you make such broad statements about a particular subject, especially NSU, do your homework and research. Since you're commenting on academia, it is imperative that you elevate your mind, provided you have one, in an effort to make credible accusations. My comments relative to NSU President were based on fact and truth, not unfair statements about her credentials. She does have a Doctorate and she is competent in the area of Engineering and Science. As a matter of fact, ODU's President does not, but since it is your intent to destroy and defame NSU, I assume thats irrelevant. ZOOKEEPER, “A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste” although to waste a mind...you must FIRST have one! Ignorance can be IGNORED, if you shut your mouth when you don't know the subject matter.
Another thumbs down
on a simple statement of fact. Some people just refuse to accept reality if it differs from their preconceived notions of their "reality". I almost feel sorry for persons so hung up on their own insecurities as much as that. Yet perhaps they find consolation within their own little world. After all, the old adage is, "ignorance is bliss".
No Facts At All
Some of the negative comments posted on this site regarding NSU are laughable at best, downright pathetic at worst. Comments are made that are wholely inaccurate. I am a graduate of NSU and I work for a major Fortune 500 company. My job has required me to have regular interactions with senior leaders of this country. And no, it wasn't with this presidential administration (before anyone screams preferential treatment). Yes, NSU has had issues with the graduation rate. There are some people on campus that may not be ready for the college environment, but that can be found at ANY institution. Through the years, NSU has tightened the admission standards from the policy of years past.
To ignorantly categorize an entire group of people that attend/graduate from an institution smacks of ignorance, bias, and a singular purpose. NSU has produced many fine professionals in many career fields, like other colleges. Someone said that they never hear anything positive about the academic side of NSU. How often do you look? Funny, I always seem to hear about crime at ODU. I've been back to the Hampton Roads area 6 times in the past two months, and it seems every time I do, I hear about some so
the truth is,
there have been thousands of graduates of MEAC schools who gave much to society, in fields as diverse as law, politics, science, education, etc. This remains true in this time. A large number of our local nurses, of all races, received their degrees at NSU. Howard is legendary in the number of outstanding law professionals it graduates. North Carolina A&T has a worldwide reputation for producing outstanding engineers. The Director of Economic Development for Va. Beach, is a Hampton University graduate. I could easily go on but this should be sufficient.
Reaping and Sowing..The Mad Scientist (continued)
...If the President compromises the integrity of the University, the Board of Visitors has the responsibility to terminate her contract. DR. Carolyn Meyers has compromised the integrity of the University on at least two MAJOR accounts. Before it's all over, the Pilot will probably tell you about them as well. Regardless as to what you think about NSU, it has afforded educational offerings for many, black and white, that otherwise would not have had such an opportunity. Therefore, allowing one President (CM) who has contributed NOTHING in nearly four years, to continue in her role, would be a travesty to all former Presidents, alumni, and current students. All in all, if anyone should wear colors because of all this...Dr. Meyers should wear the "black" eye, and NSU should stand proud while wearing and Beholding, the Green and Gold. Stay tuned...it "ain't" over 'til the Mad Scientist sings.
"If you would have take the
"If you would have take the time to do some research, then you would know that NSU has been recongnited several times for academics and like any other college in the area, they are have accomplished several things worthy of recognition! The local media just does not want to give NSU the recognition that they give other colleges in the area!"
NSU has a history of taking in ANYONE regardless if they belong in college or not. You can't erase a history of creating remedial classes so ANYONE can have a college degree. It has never earned a reputation for creating a thirst for learning. Did you not see the last article about Dr Meyers where the NSU student spoke about the chat she had with her? The student's comment about NSU was that Dr Myers had made the food better and the cafeteria workers were nicer now. ROFL ! Sorry, but NSU deserved their reputation for being a diploma mill. This kind of student proves it.
smh
You clearly don't know what you're talking about. Diploma mill? Really? NSU is fully accredited by SACS. You don't slip up and graduate from NSU...sorry.
I attended 3 different universities in my life (NSU, Strayer, & GA State) and without a DOUBT NSU was the toughest one by far.
Who Cares?
Academic Rogues and Charlatans making the rounds in the MEAC. No reputable institution would hire anyone from these schools or any of their graduates for that matter.
Speechless, you are so wrong.
Hiring officials in the Forture 500 companies and Gov't and large private companies are not caught up into the same emotional value system that you are. They deal more with skill sets. In fact I am a manager working in the Washington, DC area. I recruit for my agency. I recently did research that showed the employees from NSU had positions as great and incomes as great and respect as great as... pick any of the schools the agency recruits from. I compared demographics such as age, years in service, income, male, female, etc. It turned out that their salaries ranged from $50K to 140K which was better than some of the schools you (Speechless) may think more highly of. In my research, I also included another very large company in the Mclean, VA area. NSU students, among other HBCU students, were matching Tier 1 and 2 schools in their income and performance. I wonder how TCC students are doing. I did not include them in my research. Maybe you should transfer to NSU so you get a good education and perhaps a good job with a decent salary one day. Talk with your counselor, she/he may have more facts and less emotion to offer.
Where did you go and how much do you make?...rhetorical quest
Meyers and NSU
I think a great number of people would agree with OrfCitizen if they were comfortable speaking out. I expect Dr. Meyer's search for a new position began the day she arrived at NSU. It is not possible for her to be satisfied with anything. Her departure would be a relief to many, but I hope the search committee at Morgan gets better background research than NSU did. If so, Dr. Meyers won't be going anywhere until her contract expires at NSU. Crazy doesn't begin to explain her behavior.
