WASHINGTON

President Barack Obama has nominated Thomas G. Walker, a Charlotte-based lawyer, to be the new U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of North Carolina.

Walker, 45, is a partner at Alston & Bird LLP, which has offices in North Carolina. He’s worked at the firm since 2003, a news release from the White House said.

Prior to his work at the firm, he was special counsel to North Carolina Attorney General Roy A. Cooper III from 2001 to 2003. He also served as assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina from 1994 to 2001 and was an assistant district attorney in Mecklenburg County from 1990 to 1994.

He graduated from Baylor University in 1986 and Campbell University in 1990.

Walker was one of four that Obama nominated today. The other nominations were for U.S. Attorneys in Michigan, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The nomination is for a four-year term and the district covers the state’s 44 easternmost counties.

George E.B. Holding was nominated to the post in 2006 by Republican President George W. Bush.
