Police have charged a local woman with manslaughter and maiming in the death of one pedestrian and the injury of another after they were struck by an SUV at Town Center early Friday morning.
The SUV's driver, 29-year-old Natasha Herzog, was originally charged with a second offense of drunken driving and refusal to take a breath test, said Officer Margie Hobbs, a police spokeswoman.
Police filed the additional charges Friday evening after one of the pedestrians, 23-year-old Hunter Richardson of Suffolk, died of his injuries.
The second pedestrian suffered serious injuries to her legs, Hobbs said.
More than 440 people had joined the "Remembering Hunter Richardson" page on the social networking site Facebook on Saturday.
Richardson was an all-state football player in high school and loved hunting and fishing, said his uncle, Bill Richardson. He graduated from Virginia Tech last year and was working for a tug boat company, he said.
Hunter Richardson was an only child and had spent Thanksgiving with his parents before attending a party at Guadalajara at Town Center on Thursday night, Bill Richardson said.
Funeral services are planned for Tuesday.
"It was just tragic," Bill Richardson said. But "he crammed as much life into 23 years as anybody could."
