WILLIAMSBURG
One lane of Interstate 64 east will be closed today from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and again after 7 p.m. so that the Virginia Department of Transportation can replace about 500 feet of guardrail damaged by a crash on Thursday.
The work will continue Friday night until it is completed, a VDOT spokeswoman said.
On Thursday afternoon, a tractor-trailer car carrier struck a vehicle and came apart on I-64 on the Peninsula, backing up traffic in both directions, authorities said.
The crash happened in the eastbound lanes near the exit for Camp Peary, said Sgt. Michelle Cotten of Virginia State Police. The carrier struck an overhead sign after hitting a vehicle. I-64 east was closed to one lane, and one lane of I-64 west also was closed, she said.
At 5 p.m., VDOT said the Camp Peary exit would be closed and all traffic detoured while the crashed vehicles were removed. All lanes were reopened to traffic by 11 p.m.
The damaged sign was removed, and VDOT will replace it with a new one.
